Announcement for the Exhibition
Last year Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared August 14 to be marked as “Partition Horrors Remembrance Day. The suffering of the partition must not be forgotten. Due to senseless hatred and violence, millions of our sisters and brothers were forced to flee their homes. And many of them lost their lives. August 14 shall be celebrated as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day in honor of the hardships and sacrifices made.
At that time the Pakistani Ministry of Foreign Affairs had claimed that the celebration of the day would be rejected by the people of India since it seeks to divide Indians. Zahid Hafeez Chaudhri, the ministry’s spokesperson also argued in a statement that designating August 14 as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day recalls events in a one-sided approach. He further stated that Indian leaders would go to any length to create new divisions in order to garner more votes instead of making any effort to mend previous ones.
“We are sure that the people of goodwill in India would completely reject this political and publicity stunt that only seeks to divide.”
-Mr. Zahid Hafeez Chaudhri, Spokesperson, MEA Pakistan.
What Horrors of Partition Depicts
In its simplest basic form, the Partition of India is a tale of enormous movement and human dislocation. In a strange and unsettling atmosphere, millions of people searched for new homes in this tale as mentioned in one of the posters during the exhibition. Further, the billboard stated that “around 6.5 million Muslims came into West Pakistan from the Indian region of Punjab and Delhi while over six million non-Muslims migrated out of what had become West Pakistan.
2 million non-Muslims have left East Bengal of erstwhile Pakistan. Later, in 1950, two more million non-Muslims relocated to West Bengal of India. And about one million Muslims are said to have left West Bengal, the billboard claimed.
Before India was really divided into the Dominion of India and the Dominion of Pakistan in 1947, there had been extensive bloodshed. On August 14, 1947, the new State of Pakistan was established, and a day later, India became a free country. The day ended over 200 years of British control and cast off the burden of imperialism. Even though India’s division into two separate states had been proclaimed in June 1947, both countries’ geographical boundaries weren’t known until sometime after achieving their independence.
