MCD elections from its announcement has been in contention and has created a rift between BJP and AAP and this contention is due to BJP allegedly delaying elections.
Actually, BJP has been in power in MCD from 2007 this also includes the time when the decision of trifurcation of MCD was taken to ‘help’ then ruling party in state Congress, but this year’s Local body elections are not going to be easy for BJP at least various surveys tell us the same.
The decision of unification of MCD has also been seen as one of the ways to help the party in elections but this has given opposition enough room to blame BJP for the delay.
Opposition Claims on Current Situation and the Way Forward
BJP has been slammed by opposition for the delay, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday dared the BJP to get the civic polls in Delhi done within time and win it, pronouncing his Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) will cease politics in that case happens.
He alleged BJP has delayed the small MCD elections today, but tomorrow can delay both central and state elections hampering the rights and democratic value of the country.
He added, BJP claims to be the biggest political in the world, but it’s fearful of a small party like AAP and small MCD elections in Delhi, I dare the BJP to get the polls held well timed and win it. We will depart politics.
The leader minister appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi by joining hands to save Constitution and democracy, leaders such as you and I do not matter this country, its charter and democracy matter and they need to be protected.
He said BJP first asked the State Election Commission to defer elections and turned it into delaying elections for months just on the ground of unification of 3 of our bodies. Is this even a legitimate floor to put off the polls? Kejriwal asked.
Will they now write to the Election Commission asking them to defer Gujarat elections arguing they need to merge the state with Maharashtra? If they sense like dropping the Lok Sabha elections, will they inform the EC that they need to set up a presidential rule so elections cannot take place.
The AAP leader stated there is no meaning in having democracy if elections are cancelled because it will make people’s expression unvoiced and suppressed. Everyone is aware of the BJP is going through a crushing defeat in the approaching MCD elections so to refrain from the sort of humiliation by the hands of the AAP they are delaying the elections.
He said when entire country was paying tribute to Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru on the Sahid Diwas, BJP was busy deferring the election which is insult to martyrs. Did Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh lay down his existence for this day? Did he sacrifice all he needed to see a state in which a central authority is so coward that it delays election just in fear of losing, he asked.
Mr. Kejriwal warned the BJP that the people of Delhi will by no means forgive it for delaying the elections and hampering their basic right of electing representatives.
MCD elections are very important for both BJP and AAP seeing the coming General elections and the unification of MCDs it becomes very important for these parties to come to power in India’s one of the most powerful municipalities.
The elections cannot be delayed on any simple ground so if SEC has delayed it, we need to at least believe in our central authorities and hope for the free and fair elections whenever it happens.
