The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the coastal districts and an orange alert in eight districts of Karnataka, as heavy rainfall persisted in several parts of the state.

IMD-Red Alert-Orange Alert Areas
Coastal districts including Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Uttara Kannada were under a red alert from the IMD until Tuesday morning. A warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall and an Orange alert was given for Chikkamagaluru, Kodagu, Belagavi, Hassan and Shivamogga districts. The districts were estimated to get between 115.6 and 204.4 mm of rainfall.
5 Killed In The Rain
25th July; Five people lost their lives in different parts of Karnataka due to the heavy rainfall in the last 24 hours. The rainwater flooded the residential areas of Kushalnagar and Belagavi cities.
While crossing a stream, Mallappa Sharanappa Karepanor, a 25-year-old, was swept away. He lived in the village of Dhannura in the Basavakalyan Taluk of the Bidar district, and his exact locations are still unknown.
After their home fell due to constant rain, Basamma, a 40-year-old, native of Biral village in Jewargi taluk of Kalaburgi district, passed away there and then.
While admiring the Arasinagundi waterfall in the Udupi district, Sharat Kumar, a 23-year-old, passed away. When the young man lost his balance and was swept away by the river, a video of it went viral. Authorities continue to look for his body.
In the Uttara Kannada district, Manikantha Manjunatha Naik, a 17-year-old, washed away while attempting to swim in the Ramatheertha river close to Honnavar.
While attempting to wash his hands on the banks of the Tungabhadra River, Manjunatha Basavaraja Anandi, a 27-year-old, was washed away. The incident happened in the Ranebennur taluk of Haveri district, close to Makanuru village. People have been requested by the authorities not to approach water sources that are overflowing above danger levels.
Deputy CM’s Visit-Karnataka
Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar visited the BBMP’s war room in Bengaluru on Monday to assess the rain situation in the city as the rain continued to batter regions of Karnataka. Many parts of the state experienced flooding, including the well-known Kukke Subramanya temple, whose grounds were underwater.
Alert Advised To The Fishermen
In a statement, the IMD also advised fishermen against going out on the water in the monsoon season in the southwest. These districts will likely experience periods of moderate to heavy rain coupled with gusty gusts with speeds of up to 50 mph, according to the Meteorological Department. “Electricity will temporarily be disrupted in several places due to the heavy rainfall. Small traffic jams, potential damage to unprotected buildings, and uprooting of frail tree branches,” it added.
Schools And Institutions Remained Closed
Due to the heavy rain in several parts of the state, the authorities in eight districts of Karnataka shuttered schools and institutions on Monday.
The deputy commissioners announced holidays in Kodagu, Belagavi, Dharwad, Uttara Kannada, Haveri, Hassan, Shivamogga, Udupi, and certain taluks in Dakshina Kannada.
“Due to significant rain in the area, the five taluka in the Chikmagalur district—NR Pura, Mudigere, Sringeri, Chikmagalur, and Koppa—have all declared holidays for students.” Meena Nagaraj, Chikkamagaluru’s district collector, stated on Sunday.
The district government in the districts of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada on Monday declared a holiday for Anganwadi, schools, and pre-university colleges. Even on Tuesday, all schools, pre-university institutions, and anganwadis were closed.
27 Dead Due To Heavy Rain
The Karnataka Revenue Minister said that, during a meeting with the top officials, 27 people died due to the calamities caused by the excessive rain. Among the 27 people, 8 had died due to the thunder strikes and many others slipped into the rivers. He also said on Monday that a statewide high warning had been issued for the coming week due to the heavy rain, and the district commissioners had been advised to be ready.
Points To Be Noted
Over the past 24 hours, there has been a great deal of rain, with Kodkani and Bilgi from the Siddapur Taluk in the Uttara Kannada district receiving the most, measuring 342 mm and 235.5mm, respectively, according to the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC). On Monday, there was 220 mm of rain in Kombaru, Puttur Taluk, Dakshina Kannada.
