“We believe Avesh [Khan] and Mark Wood may be a lethal combo. They have the potential to be deadly in both the powerplay and the death. We now have [Dushmantha] Chameera to add to the mix”, enthused Sanjiv Goenka, the owner of the Lucknow Super Giants, during a media appearance during the IPL’s major auction earlier this year.
Unfortunately for LSG, Mark Wood was declared out of the IPL 2022 season well before it began, due to a right elbow injury that necessitated surgery.
As a result, Chameera had to step up to fill the position that had been assigned to Wood.
After defeating Royal Challengers Bangalore, Chameera was signed by LSG for four times his minimal cost of INR 50 lakhs.
Chameera was on the Rajasthan Royals’ squad in 2018, but owing to a back ailment, he was unable to participate in the IPL.
In 2021, RCB signed him for the second half of the IPL, but he did not play.
With Wood out injured and players like Marcus Stoinis, Jason Holder, and Kyle Mayers missing the first three games due to national duty, Chameera’s stars had finally aligned.
He took the wicket of Shubman Gill with his third delivery against Gujarat Titans and then unleashed a blistering yorker that Vijay Shankar couldn’t handle. Despite the fact that LSG lost, Chameera performed admirably.
But Chameera got a reality check against CSK on a belter of a pitch at the Brabourne stadium, with dew setting in early.
Chameera was not only the most expensive LSG bowler, but he also had a bad day on the field. He had a number of misfields and also dropped a catch.
Chameera’s pricey outing could have been forgiven on a batting-friendly pitch, but his fielding miscues raise serious doubts about his being an automatic option.
Jason Holder made his LSG debut and impressed with the ball, hence he was left out for the next game against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
He did not play against the Delhi Capitals, but he returned to the team following a couple of costly outings for Andrew Tye.
Despite not picking up a wicket, the Sri Lankan pacer made the most of his opportunity, surrendering only 22 runs in four overs against Rajasthan Royals.
He kept his spot for the game against Mumbai Indians, but his inconsistency was on display once more, with the bowler going for 48 runs in four overs while only picking up one wicket.
Despite the baggage connected with the auction price tag, Simon Doull, a former New Zealand paceman, argues that it’s all in the mind, and that clarity allows athletes to perform at their best.
“As a foreign fast bowler, the strain you put on yourself is whatever you put on yourself.”
You’ll be paid what you believe you’re worth, or what the team thinks you’re worth, if you’re picked in the auction.

If you are picked in the auction, you will be paid what you believe you are worth, or what the team believes you are worth.
Now all that’s left is for you to get out there and do your job. You’re also putting a lot of pressure on yourself because it’s the largest T20 tournament outside of a World Cup.” Cricbuzz has been notified of the issue.
The strain on an overseas pacer, especially one who is taking over a job that was planned for someone else, may be enormous.
In a competition like the IPL, the stakes are huge, and doing well here may make or break a player’s career.
However, there have been a few who have been there one season and gone the following, emphasising the importance of having an immediate impact.
With so many high-impact indigenous pacemen coming through the ranks in India, an overseas speedster requires an x-factor to be indispensable.
And it’s for this reason that role clarity is so important.
