Hardik set to lead in T-20l’s, Rohit returns in ODI’s as captain after injury, Rishabh and dhawan dropped from the squad,Team is on the way of transition.
On Tuesday, 27th December, All India senior selection committee announced the squad for the upcoming Sri lanka series. Both the T-20l and ODI teams have been announced. In T-20s, All rounder Hardik pandya will lead the team with vice captain as Surya kumar yadav. While Rohit Sharma returned to lead the team in ODI after the injury with Hardik as their deputy.
India will host Sri Lanka for six white-ball contests (3 T20Is and 3 ODIs) at the beginning of next month, with Rohit Sharma named to lead a new-look side ahead of next year’s ICC Cricket World Cup 2024 on home soil.
Big Call in T-20l Squad
Indian Stalwart Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul are not part of the T20I squad. Bhuvneshwar kumar and Mohammad Shami featuring for India in T-20 world cup are not named in the squad. Rohit is still recovering from a thumb injury, the BCCI press release did not state anything on whether Pandya’s appointment was a permanent change or just for one series. While Virat and Rahul’s exclusion were also not explained by the BCCI either the rest or dropped.
Swashbuckling Wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan has been included in both the ODI and T20I squads. While Sanju Samson is part of the T20I squad.
In T-20I, Likes of Rohit sharma, Virat kohli and Rahul will sit out and Ishan Kishan with Subman Gill expected to have the long rope in the batting slot.
All rounder Ravindra Jadeja and veteran pacer Jasprit bumrah has not been recovered yet.Shivam mavi and Mukesh Kumar got the india’s maiden call up.
Notable Rishabh’s omission from T-20I and ODI
Rishabh Pant also has been dropped from the squad. As per the news agency PTI, Pant has been asked to report at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) for a knee strengthening rehabilitation programme for two weeks. so, he will miss the Sri Lanka series. But, BCCI doesn’t mention whether he has been rested or dropped.
Dhawan dropped from ODIs
Shikhar Dhawan is the another big omission from the ODI team. Eventually, he was leading the side in New Zealand before the Bangladesh series, but his dismal drop in scoring rate and also not being able to string a series of consistent scores have gone against him.
Rohit has been suffering a thumb injury in recent times and sat out India’s recent two-match Test series in Bangladesh ahead of a hectic upcoming schedule.
After injury, India star skipper would have the much-awaited comeback in the ODI series against Sri Lanka from 10 jan.
Indian veteran opener and skipper Rohit sharma, being a white ball giant would have to go with the likes of Ishan Kishan and Subman Gill, who are in the prime form at the moment.
Have a Transition in Team?
The growth of Hardik as a T20I skipper while being Rohit’s deputy in the ODIs might be seen as a hint of transition that the side is in the phase to go through in the coming months.
Pandya, the winning captain of the IPL 2022, edition was shifted as Rohit’s replacement after India lost to England in the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup. This T20I team has a new look with the two uncapped pacers Shivam Mavi and Mukesh Kumar being joined the setup.
Shivam Mavi was picked by Titans for Rs 6 crore, while Bengal’s Mukesh was sold for Delhi Capitals in Rs 5.50 crore. Ruturaj Gaikwad and Rahul Tripathi are the two powerhouse IPL performers who made it to the T20I side.
