India clinched the 2nd Hero Intercontinental Cup beating Lebanon 2 – 0 in the Final at the Kalinga Stadium, Bhubaneshwar on Sunday. The Blue Tigers showcased exceptional skill and determination throughout the match, creating a memorable victory. This was India’s first win against Lebanon since 1977. Lebanon, which has a higher FIFA ranking of 99 compared to India’s 101, entered the final as a formidable opponent. However, the Indian team, led by the legendary Sunil Chhetri, defied expectations and delivered an outstanding performance.

India previously played drew a match against Lebanon in the league, and for the Final, India entered as the favorite. The match kicked off with an intense battle between both nations. Anirudh Thapa created an early opportunity but failed to convert it into a goal. His defensive prowess was on display as well, effectively neutralizing the threats posed by Lebanese players. Despite a high intensity start from both teams, the first half concluded with a scoreline of 0-0. In the first half, India dominated 57% of the possession.
In the second half, the Indian team exhibited increased aggression and quickly gained the upper hand. In the 46th minute, a brilliant combination of dribbling by Lallianzuala Chhangte and Sunil Chhetri’s goal-scoring prowess resulted in India’s first goal. Surely, Chhangte and Chettri – A match made in heaven. With this goal, Suni Chettri completed his 87th international goal. Continuing their dominance, India extended their lead to 2-0 in the 65th minute, with Chhangte finding the back of the net. The second half belonged entirely to the Blue Tigers, who maintained their solid defense, ensuring a clean sheet for the sixth consecutive game. India’s resilience and outstanding teamwork led them to a resounding victory. Indian Coach Igor Stimac was happy with the team’s performance and said it was the team’s vision and unwavering dedication that were instrumental in their success.
