On December 14 and 15, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will serve as the moderator of two major events on counterterrorism and reformed multilateralism, which will be held by India, the 15-nation United Nations Security Council’s current president.
According to a concept note began circulated by India within UN Security Council here, the practice of categorizing terrorists as “good” or “bad” based on “political expedience” must end right away. The concept note also stressed that classifying terrorist acts according to whether they are motivated by religion or ideology will weaken the globally interconnected commitment to combating terrorism.
The Security Council will be briefed on “Global counter-terrorism approach – principles and the way forward” on December 15 as part of a discussion on the threats to international security and peace posed by terrorist activities, according to an initiative from India.
In a statement to Assistant Antonio Guterres before the session, India’s Connection Is accepted to the UN, Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj, requested that a concept note that would serve as a roadmap for the Security Council’s talks on the matter be made available.
“September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in Manhattan marked an important turning point within the global strategy for counterterrorism. Since then, terrorist strikes have also occurred in London, Mumbai, Paris, and several locations around West Asia and Africa, according to the idea note from last week.
The attacks, it continued, serve as a stark reminder that terrorism is a real global concern and that it has a significant influence on global peace and security.
Terrorism poses a worldwide menace. Terrorist actors work together while still in separate jurisdictions with their backers, facilitators, and funders to plan attacks anywhere in the world. Only with the combined efforts of all United Nations Member States can a transnational danger be vanquished.
The note emphasized that all terrorist acts are unlawful and that the terrorist threat cannot be connected to any religion, nation, civilization, or ethnic group.
“Terrorism must be denounced in all of its manifestations and forms. No act of terrorism can be excused or justified, regardless of its intent, where it was carried out when it was done, or by whom. Politically expedient categorization of terrorists as “evil,” “not so bad,” or “good” needs to halt right away.
It stated that a fresh, united front against terrorism is necessary for light of current and emerging challenges.
