Zaman recalled the 1994 World Cup in Sydney, where he received the news of his father’s demise and how he overcame it to script history. Tahir Zaman was an integral part of the 1994 World Cup-winning Pakistan team. He said that he got the sad news of his father passing away just before the opening game against Argentina on 23rd November.

He was given the choice of going back home but he wasn’t sure of what to do. After speaking to his mother, she comforted him by saying that he can’t change anything now and it’s better if he stays there and play the World Cup. She also said that it was his father’s desire that they win the World Cup and that somehow motivated the whole team. The team defeated Argentina 3-0 in their opening match and went on to top Pool A.

It was a close match and they won in the Penalty Strokes against Germany. Players of Germany like Jeroen Delmee along with Floris Bovelander missed their chances and the late goalkeeper Mansoor Ahmed did really well in saving Penalty Strokes and made Pakistan the Champions of the 1994 World Cup.
