In India Innovation Index 2022 Karnataka has topped the list under the “Major States” category. Chandigarh leads in the city-state and union territories category whereas Manipur has secured the top position in “North East and the Hill States.”
On 21 July 2022, India Innovation Index was released in the third edition of NITI Aayog. India’s struggle to achieve an innovative economy commenced strengthening its position of India compared to the Global Innovation Index (GII). Index of 2022 was released by NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Suman Bery in which Karnataka, Chandigarh, and Manipur bagged their categories.
Besides Vice Chairman member Dr. VK Saraswat, member, CEO Parameswaran Iyer, Senior Adviser Neeraj Sinha, and Institute for Competitiveness Chairman Dr. Amit Kapoor shared the dais.
Karnataka Towards the Summit
With an aim toward sustainable growth, Karnataka has secured its position in the major states category for the third time consecutively. Under the same category, Karnataka was followed by Telangana, Haryana, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu.
Chandigarh and Manipur have played a crucial role by performing their best under the categories of ‘Union Territories and the City States’ (former) and latter being ‘North-East and Hill states.’ Moreover, 66 indicators is set for determining the innovation capacity among States/UTs. India is determined to achieve the dream to become a global hub for innovation, as stated by Dr. V K Saraswat.
Overcoming the Obstacles
One of the biggest challenges that couch India is poverty. Hence, raising millions from the manacles of poverty, providing good opportunities, and developing Aatmanirbhar Bharat is the need of the hour. Innovations by the States/UT’s and the Index being an aid giver.
“Innovation is the key to sustainable and inclusive growth,” says Dr. V K Saraswat.
Scope of Innovation
The first and second edition was launched in the month of October 2019 and January 2021, respectively. The main objective of the third edition is to transform India into an innovation-driven nation. Moreover, the index helps to identify India’s position against GII and then increases the scope of innovation in India.
As stated by Iyer, “I would like to reaffirm NITI Aayog’s continued commitment to monitoring the state of innovation in India through the India Innovation Index. We strive to improve the innovation ecosystem across the nation in partnership with the states and other stakeholders.”
Division and Performance
The increase in the number of indicators from 36 in the previous edition to 66 in the third edition denotes the competition undertaken among India’s States and UTs. The Index then evaluates the position of these states and UTs in terms of fulfilling every indicator at a satisfactory level in their innovations.
By dividing states and the union territories into 17 ‘Major States’, 10 ‘North-East and Hill States’, and 9 ‘Union Territories and the City States’, the Index covers every place in India and compares their performance rate.
Previous Indexes
In the Index released in 2021, a special section was added for a detailed analysis of the drivers of innovation to indicate their improvement. This helped the places to evaluate their positions and the factors that changed their ranking in the Index released in 2020.
Every edition is focused to decode the innovation culture in India and improve performance on a daily basis.
