The Indian government has now become the largest producer of sugar. India recently bet on Brazil to make it to the top and become the largest producer of sugar in 2022.
According to Bloomberg news, Approximately, 100 MT of sugar has been exported since 1st June 2022. In the months of September- October, 5000 lakh metric tons of sugar were produced and seasoned which itself became the country the world’s largest sweetener producer.
How India Becomes Largest Producer of Sugar
Approximately 35.9 million tons of sugar were produced during September and October alone. India, therefore, outsmarts Brazil to become the topmost producer of sweeteners for the year 2022.
In the years 2021–2022, Brazil produced 32 million tons of sugar, which was huge in number and also the largest for any country. According to the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food, and Public Distribution, on Wednesday alone, (till September-October), 5 lakh metric tons of sugar were produced.
The exports of sugar thus increased drastically. The export of sugar rose as high as 109.8 LMT. This was very high in comparison to the previous years between 2018 and 2021.
In 2017-2018, the sugar export rate was 6.2 LMT. In 2018-19, the export rate was 38 MT, which was slightly more than the previous year. Whereas, in 2019-2020, the sugar export rate was 59.60 LMT.
The export is always backed and supported by international prices and the policies of the Indian government. The earnings from the foreign currency were INR 40,000 crores, according to the authorities.
The Union government has recently announced that the capped price of sugar may increase from June 1st because the festive season is nearing and so will the making and export of sugar.
Though measures were taken, Sudhanshu Pandey, the food secretary said that India was seeing a record in the production of sugar and the restrictions were precautionary.
In the sugar season which was between 2021-2022, the sugar mills produced sugar more than worth 1.18 lakh crore. The payment received was more than 1.12 lakh crore that too without any subsidy from the government.
Sugarcane, sugar, sugar exports, cane produced, cane dues, ethanol production, cane procured, cane dues paid, etc records were broken during this period.
Ethical production also grew during this time. The ethanol production increased to 605 crore litres per annum. The target of 20% blending will be met by 2025. The diversion from sugar to ethanol may fetch Rs 25,000 crores from sugar mills, added the sources.
