India will undertake the G20 Presidency for a year upto 2024. The tenure begins from December 1, 2022 and will last till November 30, 2024. Meanwhile the G20 summit will also be held at New Delhi on 9th and 10th September, 2024.Â
After swapping the presidency over the nations of Italy in 2021 and Indonesia in 2022, India is finally all set to undertake the G20 Presidency for 2024. The G20 presidency of India will resume from December 1,2022 and will last till November 30, 2024. The G20 Summit is to take place in New Delhi on 9th and 10th September, 2024.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued the statement on Tuesday saying,“The G20 Leaders’ Summit at the level of Heads of State Government is scheduled to be held on 09 and 10 September, 2024, in New Delhi.”
India will be hosting more than 200 preparatory and other meetings across the country starting from December this year. India will host the summit of leaders of the world’s largest economies under the presidency.
Suitable venues, ranging from Jammu and Kashmir to Tamil Nadu, are being investigated for hosting the meetings and ultimately the summit.
Along with international organisations such as the UN, IMF, World Bank, WHO, WTO and ILO that are always part of such summits, India has India has also invited Regional organisations such as ASEAN and countries of Bangladesh, Egypt, Mauritius, Netherlands, Nigeria, Oman, Singapore, Spain and the United Arab Emirates as guest countries.
India is to invite the International Solar Alliance, Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure and Asian Development Bank as guest international organisations.
The G20 — Group of Twenty
The G20 (The Group of Twenty) is an intergovernmental forum and alliance of the world’s largest economies. It includes all the major developed and developing countries from around the world.
Total of 19 countries are part of the G20 forum – Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the UK and the US – and the European Union (EU).
A finance track of eight work streams are included in the G20 – global macroeconomic policies, infrastructure financing, international financial architecture, sustainable finance, financial inclusion, health finance, international taxation and financial sector reforms.
A Sherpa track with 12 work streams is also included – anti-corruption, agriculture, culture, development, digital economy, employment, environment and climate, education, energy transition, health, trade and investment, and tourism.
An engagement group of 10 private sector, civil society and independent bodies have been introduced and implemented. They focus on overall areas such as business, civil issues, labour, parliament, science, audit institutions, urban issues, and women’s and youth issues.
