Serie A club Inter Milan is seemingly interested to take midfielder Donny van de Beek from Manchester United. And the interest is coming from none other than Inter’s manager himself, Simone Inzaghi. According to media reports, Simone wants van de Beek as a reasonable alternative to his more preferred option, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.
Donny van de Beek landed in Manchester in 2020 for £35million and has largely failed to impress 3 club managers since. The 25-year-old did not start a single Premier League match last season for Manchester United and was ultimately sent on loan to Everton in January.
After Erik Ten Hag took the reigns of Manchester United this summer, there was an optimistic hope that Donny van de Beek might be able to finally kick start his career at Old Trafford. But the hopes have mostly been diminished as Ten Hag has not used the midfielder much during the season.
After playing considerably during the pre-season, it looks like van de Beek was unable to impress the manager. Apart from Donny’s late substitution against Liverpool at Old Trafford, Ten Hag has chosen to play his main options in the midfield, Scott McTominay, Christian Eriksen, and Bruno Fernandes. In all, Donny van de Beek has played only 19 minutes all season under the manager.
Recent reactions from Ten Hag and Donny van de Beek
Erik Ten Hag spoke about Donny van de Beek during the pre-season. Both of them have previously worked together at Ajax.
“It’s the same for every player; he has to do it by himself. Me as manager and the coaching staff around him can do everything to set the right conditions so he can perform, but in the end, the player has to do it himself,” said Ten Hag during pre-season. “They have to take responsibility for their performance. Donny has the capability and I have seen it [when at Ajax], but he has to prove himself.”
Donny van de Beek himself spoke about his game time one month into the season. “A club like United needs many options and it needs a big squad to play and have a good season,” said Donny van de Beek.
“Everyone wants to play, but you have to show it and you need to improve yourself every day to be in the first XI. Having lots of options will keep everyone sharp and, for this, we need lots of good players.”
With Manchester United’s midfield looking mostly set with McTominay. Fernandes and Eriksen, it needs to be seen whether Donny van de Beek can impress Ten Hag going forward. It is for the better that he does it at the earliest, or his place in Netherland’s squad for the World Cup may also be jeopardized.
And if Inter Milan manager Simone Inzaghi’s interest in Donny van de Beek grows in the coming weeks and months, the midfielder may see himself being sold out in January.
