The International Day for Eradication of Poverty 2022 is celebrated on October 17, 2022, across the globe.
Every year International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is celebrated on October 17, to spread awareness about the people suffering from poverty, and to give them a platform from which the general public’s needs, concerns, and effects on human beings will be heard.
The day is organized to acknowledge the sensitive issue which has a major concern across the globe and primarily in developing countries i.e. poverty. Poverty is an economic condition/state in which people are experiencing a lack of basic necessities which are required for living human beings, i.e. food, shelter, money, and material commodities.
History –
The first commemoration of International Day for the Eradication of Poverty took place in Paris, France 1987, When 100000 people gathered on the human rights and Liberties Plaza at Trocadero to honor victims of poverty, hunger, violence, and fear, at the unveiling of a commemorative stone by Joseph Wresinski, founder of the International Movement ATD Fourth World. In 1992, four years after the death of Wresinski, The United Nations officially declared October 17, as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.
The day is designed to promote awareness and communication regarding poverty throughout the people, communities, and societies living in poverty at large. According to the United Nations, “It represents an opportunity to acknowledge the efforts and struggles of people living in poverty, a chance for them to make their concerns heard and a moment to recognize that poor people are in the forefront in the fight against poverty”. ( Report of Secretary General, A/61/308, para.58 )
Theme –
This year 2022-2024 the theme of International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is “Dignity for All in Practice”. The theme suggests the idea of “Dignity” for each and every one. It is the umbrella theme of this day. The dignity of the human being is not only a fundamental right in itself but constitutes the basis of all other fundamental rights. Therefore, “Dignity” is not an abstract concept: it belongs to each and every one. Today, many people living in persistent poverty experience their dignity being denied and disrespected as stated on the UN’s website.
