The latest edition of IPL is here to begin. A total of 10 teams will auction this year. Two new groups are added; Gujrat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants. The Acquisitions of these franchises were made transparently through an auction process.
The Lucknow franchise was bought by Sanjeev Goenka-led RPSG Group, which had also been the owner of the Rising Pune Supergiants in the IPL 2016 and 2017 franchises. The private CVC Capital group, which has investments in the entire sporting arena in India and abroad, bought the Ahmedabad franchise.
The BCCI is ready to bring the IPL back to India because of the COVID crisis; the IPL was held in UAE for the past couple of years. However, BCCI has decided to host IPL back in India this year. The IPL 2022 will be a grand affair as it’s the first time in IPL history that ten teams will be participating in the tournament.
For the IPL auction this year, BCCI has set some guidelines for all the franchises regarding the retention of the players. Each franchise has been allotted a pool of INR 90 Crores to formulate their teams.
Existing IPL teams can retain up to 4 players, retaining 3 Indian Players and not more than 2 Overseas Players. The respective franchises release the retained players list. The BCCI has been allowed to keep three players from the list of players released by the old teams for the new units.
At the same time, they cannot only retain more than 2 Indian Players and one overseas player. Also, this year for the first time, the BCCI did not allow the franchises to have the Right To Match Card (RTM). The card enables the franchises to hold onto some of their old players. But there will be no RTMs in this year’s Auction.
