Iran to Build Atomic Bomb But has No Plan YetÂ
An Iranian news agency reports that the atomic energy chief of the country says that Iran can build nuclear weapons, but has no plan for it yet.Â
Mohammad Eslami’s comment also reflects a similar situation statement by a senior adviser to Iran’s supreme leader.Â
These claims by top officials usually raise concerns and intensify them over Iran’s nuclear program that is to begin. Iran has advanced their nuclear activities since a deal that gratified them.Â
The agreement of 2015 began to untangle after the US pulled and bring back the economic sanctions. Under this agreement with the world powers, Iran agreed to limit nuclear activity and remain under continuous surveillance of the IAEA’s inspector in return for the economic sanctions.Â
Iran told the global nuclear watchdog that it is removing 27 surveillance cameras from its nuclear facilities as of June.
The IAEA’s board censured Iran for not answering about the uranium traces that were found from the three undeclared sites by them. Rafael Grossi, IAEA Director General then said 40 cameras would work but the move will pose serious challenges.Â
Iran has continuously confirmed that its initiative of forming nuclear weapon is for purely peaceful purposes, but the Western powers and the global nuclear watchdog is yet to get convinced by their logic.
Iran also mentioned continuously that the development of the project on forming an atomic bomb is just for the citizen’s purpose. Â
The Western officials have warned to restore the deal before the time runs out and the program which will be getting conducted by Iran on the atomic bomb, cannot get reversed from such a situation.Â
On Monday, the semi-official Fars news agency, Mr. Eslami emphasized the comments made by Kamal Kharrazi, the senior adviser.Â
Mr. Eslami said that Iran is technically able to make an atomic bomb, but he mentioned that the program is not on the agenda.
On 17th July 2022, Mr. Kharrazi, himself declared in front of the Al Jazeera news channel that though Iran has the technical equipment and ability to build a nuclear weapon, that is an atomic bomb, there has been no further discussion on its process of building one.Â
There have been growing concerns among all about how much Uranium will be needed by Iran to form such an atomic bomb over the breakout. In June, Rafael Grossi, the head of the global atomic energy agency said that Iran will take a few weeks to collect the required amount of uranium.
The US put the breakout time at a year, in the period when the deal on nuclear was intact. Though Rafael Grossi confirmed the availability of uranium by Iran, he said that having enough material never meant that Iran could manufacture a nuclear bomb.Â
Uranium is an element that will have nuclear-related uses once it gets refined, which is gained by increasing the content of its most fissile isotopes, U-235. Low enriched uranium has a 35% concentration of U-235, which can be used to produce fuel for commercial nuclear power plants.
Highly enriched uranium has a purity of 20% or more, used in research works. 90% purity of uranium is needed in case of weapon making. Â
About 25kg of uranium with 90% purity is needed to form an atomic bomb. According to the latest report in May, IAEA confirmed that Iran has 43.1 kg (95lb) of uranium with 60% purity, with them. Â
Iran has the technical power to develop a bomb when Iran and the world powers revive the 2015 deal when the US unravels the economic sanctions.Â
The indirect negotiation between US and Iran that occurred in Qatar in June ended without an agreement, which impedes Vienna’s months-long talks.
