Telegram, a messaging app that’s widely used by people all over the globe, has gathered a massive user base of over 700 million individuals. What’s impressive is that it managed to become so well-liked despite there being multiple rival apps like WhatsApp. One of the things that helped make it successful is its feature that lets users keep their phone numbers private within the app.
However, there’s a new development in Iraq where the country’s Telecom ministry has chosen to restrict access to the Telegram app. The ministry’s reasoning behind this decision is rooted in concerns about national security.
Reports from media outlets are indicating that Iraq is also raising concerns about how the app handles user data. The country’s main goal is to protect its reputation and integrity. This situation poses a challenge since many people in Iraq rely on Telegram not just for messaging, but also for staying updated on news and sharing content.
In an official statement, the ministry has revealed that they contacted the app and asked them to shut down platforms that are exposing sensitive data from state institutions and citizens’ personal information. However, the company didn’t provide a response or engage with these requests.
The Ministry of Communications made it clear that they respect citizens’ rights to express themselves and communicate freely. At the same time, they emphasize the importance of maintaining the security of the state and its institutions.
It’s important to note that Iraq isn’t the only country that has taken action against Telegram. This messaging app has faced similar bans in other countries, including Azerbaijan, China, and Cuba. Back in May, Brazil reversed its decision to suspend Telegram’s services. Initially, the suspension was put in place because the app didn’t comply with an order to share information about extremist and neo-Nazi groups using the platform.
Telegram continues to hold a strong and popular presence in India, boasting an impressive user base of over 100 million people across the nation. It serves as a platform where Indian citizens actively engage in sharing content and messages.
