The University is what can be considered one of the top schools in our country. Even so, a gruesome incident befell the life of a student, on 9th August. When a budding-new-life of a 17-year-old Undergraduate was taken away from his mother’s lap.
The Incident
The 17-year-old, faced with a bundle of shame, guilt, and regret resorted to the only way out of death. Or so it seemed. The torture and the trauma inflicted upon him in the very first year of college were too much to be borne by a young mind like his. The transition from school to college itself is a big one. Standing in 2024, the idea of mental health and its troubles are not unknown to anyone. While it can never be fully ascertained as to what goes on in the minds of a little child, it can only be realized by the ones around us, that our actions have an impact. Whether good or bad.
The deceased 17-year-old was sexually abused, molested, and even exposed naked to the public. CCTV footage reveals these incidents to have occurred, not long before his death. Only minutes, in fact, before his death.
When spoken to the officials it was found out that the young 17-year-old was asked to “prove his manhood” by asking them to be naked. He was forced to undress, walk around naked, and later on, even sexually molested by his seniors.
The police officials have managed to arrest 12 people who are concerned with the case. The boy was seen jumping off of the balcony of a room in front of them. There were also reports of the creation of WhatsApp groups to try and misdirect police officials so the truth could remain hidden a little bit longer.
Social Media Wokeness?
The 17-year-old was repeatedly mocked by his seniors for his sexuality. Defining him as gay and forcing him to show his manliness. Even though we appreciate and like Harry Styles for breaking the cycle of Toxic Masculinity on social media, somehow our mindset does not divulge too far into real life and acceptance. While people are celebrating Pride Month on the streets of Kolkata, I hope they are reminded of incidents such as these which snatched away the life of a young boy.
Ragging Culture
Ragging is a part of most colleges, especially Engineering Colleges, for some reason not known to me, it has been normalized for quite a long period. The representation of ragging can be seen in Aamir Khan’s movie “3 Idiots”. Except in the movie, Rancho rags his seniors instead, using his wit and intelligence.
Even so, ragging has become an indispensable part of most colleges. While freshers should be welcomed with a freshers party by their seniors, they are welcomed through assault and molestation.
What does this incident tell us about Raging culture? While most people find it funny, a lot of others become the victim of the same. Being Sexually Molested, many may find it to be the boy’s fault as to why he did not react or scream. Our body fights or flights right? Well, there is another response when a body is attacked, it freezes. The common misunderstanding people have about the victims of abuse.
Swapnodeep Kundu, the first-year student, lost his life on what he thought would be one of the best days of his life.
