After the third and final ODI of India’s tour to England on September 24, veteran fast bowler Jhulan Goswami will call it quits in international cricket at Lord’s. With 352 wickets across all formats, she will retire the game as the leading wicket-taker in women’s internationals.
The 39-year-old was picked for the Indian ODI team for the 3 matches at Hove (September 18), Canterbury (September 21), and the Lord’s (September 24).
Goswami reportedly had a conversation with the team management about looking to the future and developing a pool of talented fast bowlers who can play in different formats.
Goswami’s most recent appearance for India was in March of this year in New Zealand at the ODI World Cup. According to a board official, the BCCI wanted to give her a “proper farewell” because Jhulan “couldn’t say goodbye on the field” after suffering a side strain prior to India’s last group match against South Africa. Her last Test match was in October 2021, and she hasn’t played in T20Is since 2018.
Jhulan tops the list of highest wicket-takers in the format with a mind-boggling 252 wickets, giving her the most ODI wickets. According to reports, the Indian great will retire from the sport she began competing in back in 2002.
In Chennai in January 2002, he made his international debut in an ODI match against the English women. She made her Test debut against the same opponent in the same month as well. In 2006, Jhulan also made his T20 debut against England.
Due to fitness concerns, Goswami was scheduled to tour Sri Lanka in July but was unable to go. She wasn’t fully fit again until mid-July, at which point the National Cricket Academy medical team gave their approval for her to be chosen for the England tour.
Goswami is keeping her options open for the March 2024 start of the first women’s IPL. She is also in talks with a men’s IPL team about a mentorship position, and for the 2018 domestic season, she will play for and serve as a mentor for the Bengal women’s team.
Not to forget, Mithali Raj, a longtime teammate of hers in the India dressing room, announced her retirement from all formats last month after an extraordinary career spanning over two decades.
Jhulan has played for India in 12 Test matches, taking 44 wickets total with the best match total being 10 for 78. She has participated in 201 ODIs for India, winning 252 wickets, with her best performance being 6 for 31. Jhulan has participated in 68 T20 matches, taking 56 wickets and recording one five-wicket haul.
In 2017, she was a member of the team that advanced to the ICC Women’s World Cup final. Jhulan was chosen for the ODI team to face England at the beginning of September. She now only participates in one format, the one-dayers.
