Apart from BJP’s massive yet expected victory in UP, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav’s margin of over 67,000 seats in Karhal is astounding. SP registered a 10% increase in the vote share compared to the 2017 assembly elections. Â
It is also important to note that Yadav has never fought a Vidhan Sabha election before, and Karhal is a strong foothold of the Yadav family. Karhal also marked the highest voter turnover in the state. The Karhal Assembly constituency falls under the Mainpuri parliamentary constituency, which Mulayam Singh Yadav represents in the Lok Sabha.Â
Yadav had been leading the party campaign all by himself. Meanwhile, The BJP had fielded a union minister and Member of Parliament from Agra, SP Singh Baghel, to stand against the SP chief. Despite an increasing vote share and a significant margin in Karhal, SP fell short compared to the BJP.Â
It is also important to note that SP this time took the stance of aligning with smaller parties and not with its former alliances, BSP and Congress. Â
