The legendary German fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld, who passed away in February 2019 at the age of 85, is going to be honoured at the Met Gala in 2024.
The theme of the fundraiser that will be conducted by the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art was disclosed on Friday morning during a news conference that was held from Lagerfeld’s photo studio in France for editors who were in town for Paris Fashion Week.
According to a press release issued by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the exhibit will be officially titled “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” and it will feature approximately 150 of Lagerfeld’s greatest outfits from his prolific six decade career.
These outfits will include designs for labels such as Balmain, Patou, Chloé, Fendi, Chanel, and his own eponymous label. The vast majority of the looks will be accompanied by a well-known sketch by Lagerfeld that was taken from his archive.
Inspiration behind the theme of Met Gala
Andrew Bolton, the head curator of the Institute, got inspiration for the topic for the presentation from the fact that Karl Lagerfeld frequently used sketches as a way of communication with his design associates.
After the revelation, Bolton was quoted on CNN as saying, “Every single design he has created was first conceived as a drawing,”
When I first saw the sketches, the first thing that went through my mind was, “These are so delightful, so whimsical, so impressionistic.” But what I didn’t realise was that they contained particulars like the width of the shoulders and the length of the sleeves.
And every single member of (his) team was completely aware of the significance of each line and dot.The Met Gala is a yearly event that takes place on the first Monday in May. It is widely considered to be one of the most important fashion events that take place during the year.
It is usually referred to as “the Oscars of fashion.” and the Met Gala is an annual fundraising event held for the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The attendees of the event, which is by invitation only, are holding their breath as they anticipate seeing how their favourite celebrities will interpret the evening’s theme through the apparel they wear on the red carpet.
Fashion icons, trend-setters, and agents of change are all put to the test by commissioning original outfits that pay homage to the idea while also making a statement.
Historically, the price of a single ticket was $30,000, while the average cost of a table was approximately $275,000.
Even though the Gala has been around since 1948, it wasn’t until the 1970s that the shows began to be organised in accordance with a common theme.
Previous years’ themes have included “Camp: Notes on Fashion,” in 2020, which highlighted excessively tacky fashions that pushed the frontiers of fashion, and “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion,” in 2021, which praised the expressiveness of the American people as expressed through their apparel.
The theme and dress code for the Met Gala in the year 2022 were both inspired by the years 1870-1890. The event was held in honour of “In America: An Anthology of Fashion” (known as the Gilded Age New York).
There has been no announcement made regarding who will serve as co-chairs of the Gala; however, celebrities such as Lady Gaga, Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Meryl Streep, Rihanna, and Amal Clooney have all attended the event in the past.
Lagerfeld was a legendary figure in the world of fashion, and he was easily identifiable thanks to his signature all-black costume, large black sunglasses, and white hair.
Karl Lagerfeld and His Reputation
In an interview with The New York Times in 2015, Karl Lagerfeld famously stated that he would rather “die on the spot.” than retire. He worked tirelessly until the very end, much like his predecessor Gabrielle Chanel did before she passed away while finishing her next collection.
Even though he did not appear to take a bow at the completion of his final Paris Haute Couture show in January 2019, he did conceive the collection for Fendi’s autumn ready-to-wear line and lead the teams that worked on it.
Lagerfeld was not only a fashion designer; he also filmed and directed all of the commercials for the corporations whose garments he produced. Lagerfeld was a multi-talented individual.
He photographed photos of the models and actresses who inspired him, including Kristen Stewart, Claudia Schiffer, and a great number of others.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art will play home to the annual Met Gala on May 1 of that year, 2024. The public will be able to view the display starting on May 5 and continuing through July 16 of this year.
