With the recent win in the W60 ITF event in Saguenay, Canada on Sunday, Karman Kaur Thandi has now become India’s new number 1 women’s singles tennis player. She has replaced the long-time Indian number 1 Ankita Raina, who is ranked 297 currently.
With the greatest achievement of her tennis career, Thandi has reached the WTA rankings of 217. Before this feat, she was ranked 308. Olympian Ankita has slipped down 13 places to 297 now.
As far as other Indian players are concerned, the top five women’s singles players consist of Rutuja Bhosale at 411, Riya Bhatia number 490 and Sahaja Yamalapalli placed at 508.
However, this isn’t Thandi’s best ranking. In 2018, she had already achieved her career-best 196 rankings. The Saguenay win is Karman’s third singles title and II this year.
Earlier, She won a W25 tournament in June at Gurugram. She won her first singles title in Hong Kong in 2018.
In the final of the W60 ITF event, Karman Kaur came back from a set down to beat Canada’s Katherine Sebov by 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Earlier Karman had handed the defeat to the second seed Robin Anderson (USA) in Round 1 and French Open mixed doubles champion 2022, Japanese Ena Shibahara in the second round.
Karman had upset the French Chloe Paquet in round 1, who was then world number 109, in the Chennai Open. In the second round, she had given a good fight to the Wimbledon finalist Eugenie Bouchard.
Focus on Grand Slams: Thandi’s coach
Aditya Sachdeva is that man who has been Karman’s coach for almost a decade now. He said that he now wants her to play in the Grand Slams.
The 24-year-old Chandigarh star has been on the rise this year and Sachdeva now wants Thandi to aim for the main draw of the Grand slam
“Winning tournaments is always good but it is also the first step towards the main journey. She qualifies to play in the qualifying rounds of the Grand Slams now but we want to be in the main draw,” quoted Sachdeva(Source Tribune)
