On Sunday, Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah announced that the Bengaluru Police withdrew the ‘zero traffic’ policy for his vehicle. Zero traffic is a privilege provided to the Chief Minister, Home Minister, Governor, and certain VIPs from the union government. Where all the roads that they take are cleared off and blocked by the city Police for the official’s hindrance free movement.
Yesterday, the CM told the police that he no longer wanted that service because he didn’t like the idea of it affecting the citizens and took it to Twitter stating that “I have asked the Bengaluru City Police Commissioner to take back the ’Zero Traffic’ protocol for my vehicular movement. I have taken the decision after seeing the problems faced by the people traveling along the stretch where there are restrictions due to ‘zero traffic’ ”.
The CM witnessed a lot of jams that were serious while commuting from his residence at Race Course Road to attend his grandson Dhawan Rakesh’s graduation ceremony in Manchenhalli Road, Yelahanka that prompted him for this decision, said his CMO officials.
Also Bengaluru had a heavy rainfall yesterday that flooded many areas and several trees had uprooted. The rain was very untoward. A 22 year old girl named Bhanurekha, who worked at Inosys lost her life yesterday. Her car sank in a flooded underpass at KR circle within 1 kilometer radius away from the Vidhana Soudha. She was trapped with five others in the car, while the others were rescued she was rushed to St Martha’s Hospital but did not survive.
And many of them feel that this unfortunate incident struck the chord for the CM to cancel the zero traffic policy. The CM visited the hospital and declared a compensation of five lakh Rupees to her family. Later while talking to the reporters he said that the family was from Andhra Pradesh and had rented a car to go around the city and a barricade that was placed to prevent people from going in that lane had fallen due to rain.
Former CM Basavaraj Bommai had called off the zero traffic policy but opted for zero signal. But all the others enjoyed the policy hence, the commissioner praised Siddaramaiah for canceling the policy. His decision was made loud and clear on the internet and the netizens widely appreciated him. Bengaluru as a city is known for a lot of things and one of them is its traffic. As an official there would be a lot of businesses that will be very important. In a city with a traffic like this in Bengaluru, is it really possible for the CM to make his decision work throughout his tenure, is a question that arises. Although the state is still succumbing to the new administration, the people hope that this decision sticks and many more like this are taken keeping people in mind hoping that this is not a PR stunt.
