Karnataka Hijab Row: Muslim girl students and their parents in Karnataka staged protests in roughly 50 government high schools. They demanded the right to attend classes while wearing hijabs. On Monday, high schools around the state resumed, with minimal protests on the first day.
The state administration has increased police security as pre-university colleges reopen on Wednesday following violent protests last week over wearing hijab in classrooms.
On Tuesday, 13 girl students across the state skipped the SSLC preparation examination because they were not allowed to enter classrooms wearing the hijab, while over 500 pupils boycotted classes.
Except for seven Udupi and Kundalpur, most private and government PU colleges in the coastal regions appeared undisturbed by the hijab-versus-saffron-shawl debate.
Dakshin Kannada, known for its communal sensitivities, has kept the PU colleges peaceful and the controversy at bay. Principals of numerous colleges are optimistic that classes will resume on Wednesday without a hitch.
