In 2017, while still a youngster, Mbappe decided to leave his first club, Monaco, for PSG rather than Real Madrid, who had chased him all summer, citing the prospect of playing time and development in the French league as justification.
A year earlier, Mbappe was ready to depart. Still, this time, PSG blocked the transfer, reportedly rejecting an offer of close to $200 million for his talents — the second-highest sum ever, behind Neymar ($263m). The conventional wisdom was evident. Mbappe wanted to go, but PSG could not allow him since they had just recruited Lionel Messi and wanted to make a genuine run at the Champions League. However, next summer, if he does not extend his contract, there is nothing to prevent him from leaving.

This was an enormous victory for the French club and its Qatari owners. Fayza Lamari, the mother of Mbappe, said a day earlier that there would be no more conversations with clubs over her son’s future. Both Madrid and PSG offered their best and last offers to retain him.

At Real, my kid would retain ownership of his image rights. His decision will be awaited.”

It is uncommon to have such clarity from a de facto agent; Mbappe depends on his split parents, Fayza and Wilfried, for representation. Many interpreted it to mean that he was ready to commit to PSG but did not want to go on bad terms and was eager to demonstrate that the French club had done all possible to retain him. Perhaps if the information had come from an agent, who would have to do future business with both teams, that would have been the case. Not so much when said by a mother.
Regarding Real Madrid, this seems like a terrific “Will they, or won’t they?”-style soap opera romance. The old cliche was that you could only refuse someone so many times before they eventually get their way. Mbappe may have exhausted his allocation of “nons” unless there is further information that we do not know. Maybe, his new contract at PSG has a release clause or is only an extension so he can try again to win the Champions League with Messi by his side and join Madrid in the future. However, this is just conjecture.

The fact is that the 2022-23 season must be prepared for. After years of relatively restrained expenditure by their standards, Real Madrid planned to reload this summer, with Mbappe serving as the crown jewel of their buying binge. Plan B must now be implemented.
