Lakshya Sen killed two birds with one stone: entered German Open finals and marked the end of Viktor Axelsen’s winning streak against India.
The 20-year old booked his spot in the men’s single finals winning the 3 game set again the Olympic winner from Denmark, Viktor Axelsen.
In the first match, Sen took the lead and maintained it throughout the game.
Sen opened up with a 4-1 lead and afterward stretched it out to 9-4. Later, Axelsen restricted it down to 7-9 after which Sen snatched four continuous points to make it 13-7.
Sen’s going after game delivered profits as he took five successive points to lead 18-10 thereby securing the main game effortlessly.
The second match was a neck to neck battle with Axelsen trying to take it to the deciders while Sen trying to book his spot in the finals. From 3-8 to 8-8 and then finally closing at 12-21 the match kept the audience at the edge of their seats.
The deciders saw the two players fighting tooth and nail. From trailing the game at 8-15, Sen turned the game around to 17-19, eventually winning at 21-20.
Sen won not only the game but also the heart of millions of badminton enthusiasts with his defense and brilliant comeback in the final game against Axelsen.
Earlier in the season Sen won a gold in the India open against Loh Kean Yew from Singapore. Lakshya is set to fight for his second title of the season in the Super 300 tournament finals.
Sen made it to the semi-finals after defeating former top 10 player HS Prannoy in the quarterfinals with 21-15, 12-16.
The final showdown, to win the German Open crown would be between Lakshya Sen from India and the Kunlavut Vitidsarn from Thailand on Sunday, March 13.
Kunlavut Vitidsarn qualified for the super 300 tournament finals after smashing the All England champion from Malaysia, Zii Jia Lee with 21-13, 21-12.
After defeating the world No.1 in the semi-finals that lasted for an hour and 10 minutes, Sen will see off his former junior years rival in the finals.
