Last rites

Sri Basava Siddalinga Swami’s Suicide
The seer of a Lingayat mutt in Karnataka’s Belagavi district, Basava Siddalinga Swami, was discovered hanged in his rooms on Monday. At the Sri Guru Madiwaleshwar mutt, he was a seer.
On Monday morning, his followers and attendants discovered him dead. A letter believed to be his suicide note has been found by police, and they are now looking into the circumstances surrounding his passing. We don’t yet know what the note says.
According to police sources, the seer was angered by an audio clip of two women discussing suspected instances of sexual assault in mutts. The name of the now-deceased seer was also mentioned by the women in the recording.
His passing coincides with the continuing debate around the Lingayat seer Shivamurthy Murugha Sharanaru, who was accused of abusing young females. He was charged with violations of the POCSO Act, which protects children from sexual offences.
Shiva Murthy Sharanaru, the leader of the Muruga Math, a significant Lingayat seminary in the state, was detained earlier this month on suspicion of sexually assaulting two young girls. Both females have long accused him of abusing them sexually.
Following protests by members of the civil society and a number of organizations in the Karnataka districts of Chitradurga and Mysuru, he was taken into custody.
