Atletico Madrid knocks Manchester United out of the Champions League 2022; enraged United fans through bottles at Atletico’s manager.
Atletico Madrid broke the last straw after a hopeless season for Manchester United as Renan Lodi’s header booked the spot for the Spanish victors in the Champions League quarter-finals. With a 1-0 win at Old Trafford to advance 2-1 on total, Madrid won the two game set against United taking another step towards the trophy.
UEFA Champions League is the most prestigious club football tournament in all of Europe. Manchester United has been facing a drought in winning the silverware in the tournament for several years now, their last win was dated back in 2017.
Struggling to win the trophy, getting Cristiano Ronaldo also known as Mr. Champions League on the team this season did not work out in the favor of Man United, as they had hoped.
The first match of the set was played at Madrid’s stadium, Wanda Metropolitano. It ended up with a tie at 1-1. The second match was played at Old Trafford, United’s stadium.
The Brazilian full-back headed in plain at the back post four minutes before half-time to end United’s last opportunity of winning this season as their dry spell without a prize starting around 2017 goes on.
Manchester now face a difficult undertaking just to get once more into the Champions League next season as a failing to meet expectations crew loaded up with star names sits fifth in the Premier League.
For the fans of the Red Devils, it was one thing to get knocked out of a tournament but it was a totally different kind of rage after losing a match on their home ground.
Channeling their inner devils, the fans took out all of their frustration against Madrid on Atletico’s manager; Diego Simeone. Soon after the final whistle for the match was blown Simeone decided to make his way to the team’s dressing room. On his way back, he became a target of the disappointed United fans.
However, Diego was unfazed by the incident and did not stop to give any kind of a reaction. The draw for the quarter-finals will take place on Friday, March 18, in Nyon, Switzerland at the House of European Football.
