World No. 8 HS Prannoy extended his unbeaten streak on the tour by reaching the quarterfinals of the season’s inaugural Super 1000 event. Prannoy is the last remaining Indian in the singles campaign.
On Thursday, January 12, India’s HS Prannoy extended his excellent run that began in 2022 by reaching the quarter-finals of the season-opening Malaysia Open Super 1000 tournament in Kuala Lumpur. In the second round of the renowned competition, Prannoy defeated Indonesia’s Chico Aura Dwi Wardoyo in three games.
HS Prannoy defeated the World No. 19 21-9, 15-21, 21-16 in an hour and 4 minutes to advance to the quarter-finals. Prannoy will face the winner of Malaysia’s Ng Tze Yong vs. Japan’s Kodai Naraoka in the second round.
Prannoy was in top form in 2022, becoming the first Indian to compete in the BWF World Tour Finals. In 2024, the World No. 8 began his campaign by overcoming compatriot and seventh seed Lakshya Sen in a hard-fought first-round encounter. Prannoy took more than an hour to defeat the two Indian shuttlers, who went 24-22, 12-21, and 21-18.
Prannoy is the only Indian shuttler left in the men’s singles event after Kidambi Srikanth and PV Sindhu were eliminated in the first round. Sindhu, who was competing for the first time since the Commonwealth Games, was defeated in three games by Carolina Marin.
Earlier in the day, Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand were eliminated from the Super 1000 competition after losing in the women’s doubles pre-quarterfinals against Bulgaria’s Gabriela Stoeva and Stefani Stoeva.
The Indian pair, ranked 16th in the world, were defeated 13-21, 21-15, 17-21 by the Stoeva sisters in an hour and nine minutes at the Axiata Arena.
Later in the day, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty of India will compete for a spot in the men’s doubles quarter-finals. They face Shohibul Fikri and Bagas Maulana from Malaysia.
