This article is about the meeting going to be held on 15 June 2022 for the leaders of political parties to discuss the presidential election on 18 July 2022.
Mamata Banerjee, the leader of the Trinamool Congress, called representatives of 19 political parties to a meeting on June 15 in Delhi to discuss the forthcoming presidential election.
The presidential election is set to take place on July 18, with results expected on July 21. Members of the electoral college, which includes members of both houses of Parliament as well as elected members of the legislative assembly of all states and union territories, elect the president.
The term of President Ram Nath Kovind finishes on July 24.
The letter tweet sent by Mamata’s party said “Our honorable chairperson Mamata Banerjee calls upon all progressive opposition forces to meet and deliberate on the future course of action; at the Constitution Club, New Delhi on the 15th of June 2022 at 3 pm,” the Trinamool Congress tweeted, attaching a letter sent out to Maharashtra Chief Minister and Shiv Sena former leader Uddhav Thackeray.
Mamata sent the letter to Sonia Gandhi, Uddhav Thackeray of the Shiv Sena, Arvind Kejriwal and Bhagwant Mann of the Aam Aadmi Party, and Pinarayi Vijayan of the Communist Party of India (Marxist).
The letter stated, “All progressive forces in our country must remain together and reject the dividing force that is troubling us today.”
Mamata Banerjee stated that the election provides the “ideal chance for all progressive opposition parties” to discuss India’s future political path. “At a time when our democracy is facing challenges, I believe that a productive convergence of opposition views is essential,” she said.
All progressive forces must unite to “fight the dividing influence” that is harming India, according to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
Mamata also claimed that India’s image was being tarnished worldwide, a clear allusion to Muslim-majority countries’ criticism of suspended BJP spokesman Nupur Sharma’s insulting remarks about Prophet Muhammad.
The successor to current president Ram Nath Kovind will be chosen by 4,809 electors, including MPs and MLAs. BJP is in a strong position to assure the success of the candidate it nominates in the next election, based on its strength in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, as well as in several state legislatures.
Many politicians opposed the meeting invited by Mamata, D. Raja, the CPI’s general secretary, said he received the letter via email but didn’t know who Mamata met before scheduling the meeting of the leaders.
D. Raja, said “It is wrong to call a meeting without first consulting with others. The current situation necessitates the cooperation of all secular democratic parties. I’m not sure how other parties will react to Banerjee calling a meeting like this. In terms of CPI, we’ll have to engage with other parties and hold internal discussions before making a final decision.
Why is Congress not impressed by the Presidential election meeting called by Mamata Banerjee?
When Mamata called the meeting for discussion over presidential elections the move stunned and angered the main opposition Congress, which had launched an outreach to like-minded groups, including the TMC.
Sources within the party questioned the need for Banerjee to take such a step. A top Congress representative is said to have expressed the party’s concerns to the TMC.
Sonia Gandhi reached out and deliberated the matter of the upcoming presidential election with Sharad Pawar, Mamata Banerjee, and several other Opposition leaders, according to the Congress, and as per her discussions with other opposition leaders, she
has delegated Mallikarjun Kharge to coordinate with other leaders given her ill health due to Covid.
This is, what she said according to the statement, The Congress Party believes that the country requires a President who can preserve the Constitution, our institutions, and our citizens from the governing party’s relentless assault. This is a pressing requirement. While the Congress Party has not proposed a name, we owe it to our people to pick a President who can restore the social fabric of our country and preserve our Constitution.
The meeting for a presidential election is all set to happen on 15 June 2022 but because of the opposition to the meeting organized by Mamata, it might get delayed.
