Today, the Supreme Court will hear the case of two Manipur-based women who have dishonoured their nation. The Centre’s appeal to move the hearing of the case involving the lynching of two women will be taken into consideration by the supreme court today.

The Supreme Court was scheduled to hear several petitions related to ethnic violence in Manipur on July 28. However, the hearing was postponed due to the health issue of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud.
Uproar across the country
Significantly, outrage has spread across the nation since the incident on May 4’s viral video. The uproar has continued in Parliament since the beginning of the monsoon session. The BJP has strongly condemned the incident, but at the same time, questions are being raised about the timing of making the video viral. The day before the monsoon session started on July 20, the video went viral.
Supreme Court had taken Automatic Cognitive Processing
The Supreme Court had taken Automatic Cognitive Processing in this matter and termed it as a gross violation of very constitutional rights. Fixing the next hearing on July 28, the top court sought an explanation from the central and state governments and asked them to ensure that such incidents do not recur. On July 28, the Supreme Court was scheduled to hear several petitions concerning ethnic violence in Manipur. Due to Chief Justice DY Chandrachud’s health condition, the hearing was, however, postponed. This bench also includes Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Mishra. It will also hear a fresh petition which is directly related to the May 4 incident in Manipur.
The petitioners in this case, who are identified only as x and y, have had their identities hidden, though. A record reveals that the petition is in respect of First Information Report (FIR) No. (110) (6)(2024). Zero FIR regarding this incident was registered at Saikul police station in Kangpokpi district.
Later, it was moved to the Thoubal district’s Nongpok Sekmai police station. In this FIR, the village head of the village where the incident took place has identified the attackers as people from Meitei groups. It stated that three Kuki women were stripped, paraded naked, assaulted, one of them gang-raped, and her father and brother killed by a mob after the family assaulted them. At the same time, the accused have been released from the custody of the police team.
What happened on 4th May in Manipur?
Let us inform you that this occurrence took place in village B in the Kangpokpi district, 35 km away from Imphal, the state capital. Happened in Phenom. According to the complaint lodged by the village head, on May 4 at around 3 pm, 900-1000 people belonging to various organizations came to B. Phenom forcefully entered the village. They had cutting-edge weaponry including 303 rifles, SLR INSAS, and AK rifles.
After robbing homes of their furniture, electronics, kitchenware, clothes, and other valuables, including cash, the savage mob set fire to everything that could be moved.
In addition, five villagers ran for cover in the forest to save their lives. They were later rescued by the Nonpak Sekmai police team and were on their way to the Nongpoh Sekmai police station. In the meantime, they were taken from the protection of the police squad by a crowd on the way, around two kilometres from Nongpok Sekmai police station and about three kilometres from 33 AR Somrei outpost. In addition, a 56-year-old guy died there and there.
According to Pradhan, three ladies were stripped naked in front of the mob at this time after being forced to remove their clothing by the mob. The males are seen repeatedly abusing the defenceless ladies in the incidental footage as they sob and beg them to stop. The depravity continued; a 21-year-old woman was savagely gang-raped in broad daylight.
When the 19-year-old younger brother tried to save his sister’s dignity and life, he was killed on the spot by the mob. However, The victim, with the assistance of a few civilians, was able to escape the area.
