The new all-electric Maserati GranTurismo Folgore offers 280 miles of range with a huge 750bhp punch. The GranTurismo Folgore was announced in March and will be the Italian automaker’s first EV.
Maserati is gearing up to launch its first EV ahead of its Grecale electric crossover SUV, which was announced earlier this year. The company plans to shift to EV-only sales by 2030. Maserati also plans to offer electric versions of every model by 2025.
The GranTurismo Folgore marks the electric future of the Italian carmaker. Therefore, all-electric Maseratis will use the name Folgore.
The Folgore looks quite identical to the Modena and Trofeo models on the outside. It looks like an incarnation of the original GranTurismo Coupe. The headlamp and tail lamp designs are inspired by the MC20. The iconic trident grille is also included.
With its all-electric Folgore, Maserati is hoping to entice customers to look into a zero-emission future. The interior of Folgore has bucket seats made of recycled ocean waste, which is the only noticeable change.
Maserati’s new all-electric GranTurismo Folgore
The GranTurismo includes a 92.3kWh battery built on an 800-volt architecture. The Italian automaker claims that the battery cells have been uniquely arranged in a T-shape. This lets all four of the passengers sit as low as the gas versions.
You do, however, lose some trunk space as Folgore has about 9.5 cubic feet of storage as compared to 11 cubic feet of the gas versions.
The system can receive up to 270 kW at a DC fast charging station. The battery adds around 60 miles of range in just the first 5 minutes at that rate. A Level 2 AC station will charge the battery at 22 kW.
You can choose from the default GT mode, which limits the power supply to 80%, Max Range Mode, which limits acceleration and the top speed to 81 mph, Sports, or Corsa. The Corsa mode features Max Boost and Endurance sub-settings.
The all-electric GT focuses more on power
Maserati won’t be holding back in the performance department, though. The company says that the battery pack can continue transmitting about 750 horsepower to all four wheels. It can also discharge hundred percent of the power through the rear axle only, making the Folgore rear-wheel drive when needed.
The electric Folgore will achieve 0-62mph in just 2.7 seconds, 124mph in 8.8 seconds, and can reach a top speed of about 199mph. The top speed is almost the same as Tesla’s Model S Plaid.
The GranTurismo Folgore makes use of lightweight materials like aluminum and magnesium, with high-performance steel. The 4,959mm (195.2 inches) long EV has a curb weight of 2,260 kilograms. The company estimates the GranTurismo to cover about 280 miles (450 kilometers) in a single charge (WLTP).
Folgore’s new interior cabinet
Maserati says that the interior features a modern cabinet equipped with new technology. This includes a digital clock, Maserati Intelligent Assistant (MIA) Multimedia System, a comfort display, a heads-up display as well as an optional immersive Sonus faber 3D sound system.
The heads-up display keeps your eyes on the road while a digital rear-view mirror uses the back camera to help with tricky parking situations.
The comfort display brings together all the main functions in an integrated touchscreen interface. The iconic center clock is also a screen now and can be changed into different styles.
Maserati’s voice assistant MIA also shows up displaying soundwaves when you’re interacting with it. You can also choose from some widgets like a compass, a G-meter, or a stopwatch.
Alexa, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay options are also available. Even though this is a sports car, driver aids such as active lane assist, a 3D road view that includes nearby vehicles, and a 360-degree view to navigate tight spots are also available.
The Italian manufacturer is trying to get ahead of local sports car rivals Ferrari and Lamborghini. Both the brands have been offering hybrid cars for some time now but have been reluctant to go full electric. Maserati is trying to lure consumers who want an Italian exotic without spending too much on fuel.
Maserati is expected to start sales of the GranTurismo Folgore in Europe in July 2024. UK and US sales will follow in September. The GranTurismo will also likely arrive in India shortly after the global launch. The EV is expected to have a starting price of around $170,000.
