One was dead and five were injured in a mass stabbing incident in northern Milan, including Arsenal player Pablo Mari, who’s currently on loan.
According to local media, the 30-year-old cashier died after being stabbed by the attacker in Assago.
The unnamed attacker, 46, has been captured by the police and no motive for a terrorist attack has been found till now. The attacker has mental health issues and had stolen the knife off the supermarket shelves, which he used to attack his victims.
The attacker started to stab people at random around 6:30 pm local time (10:00 pm IST) in a Carrefour, situated in a local shopping center.
According to witnesses, screams could be heard from the center, and many people were trying to flee from the attacker due to panic.
Several customers were able to detain the attacker and handed him over to the police for custody upon their arrival.
Among the five stab victims, a few suffer from life-threatening injuries, and another is being treated for shock, according to the news agency ANSA.
The Spanish defender, Pablo Mari, 29, was stabbed by the attacker on the back. Fortunately, his injuries have been deemed non-life threatening by doctors. Arturo Canales, his agent, said that no vital organs were damaged and he is conscious.
Adriano Gallini, the CEO of Monza, said that the Spaniard was out shopping during the time of the attack with his wife and his son in a trolley when he felt a pain in his back, which was the attacker’s knife. He witnessed the attacker stab a person in the throat and “everything”, which was ” deeply disturbing”.
Mari is on loan to the Italian Serie A club Monza for the season, and his loan clause also includes a buyout clause if needed. Both the clubs are in talks with each other over the incident.
Mari was bought by Arsenal from the Brazilian club, Flamingo, in the January transfer window in 2020. He has played 19 games for Arsenal and was sent on loan to the Italian Serie A club this year.
Arsenal boss, Mikel Arteta, said that the club is in contact with Mari’s relatives and said that he is currently in the hospital and feeling fine.
