Despite attracting a staggering 100 million users within its initial week of release, Meta’s Threads has unfortunately experienced a significant decline, losing 50% of its user base.
Meta’s new app, Threads, created by Mark Zuckerberg, is seen as a rival to the Twitter app. The social media app received a strong positive reaction on its launch, with over 100 million sign-ups within the first five days. The number of active users, however, has since decreased. According to a SimilarWeb analysis, the number of daily active Threads users plummeted from 49 million on July 7 to 23.6 million on July 14.
The CEO candidly acknowledged that if 100 million people signed up for the app, a significant portion might not remain active. However, he reassured that this is a normal aspect of how things work and there’s no need to worry about it.
Zuckerberg openly acknowledged that the number of people signing into the app exceeded their expectations, although it wasn’t a flawless outcome. He elaborated on the point, expressing that numerous users might find great pleasure in the experience provided by Threads. Nevertheless, the team at Meta must consistently strive to improve this experience, guaranteeing that users remain actively involved with the platform.
Recently, Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, verified with The Washington Post that the platform will soon introduce a direct messages (DMs) feature, allowing users to chat with both friends and followers.
Given that Meta’s other social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram have already incorporated DM options, implementing the same feature on its latest social media platform, set to rival X (formerly known as Twitter), shouldn’t be too challenging for the company.
Currently, Threads allows users to share text and links, respond to, or share messages from others, offering functionality comparable to Twitter’s platform. Users have the ability to transfer their existing follower lists and account names from Instagram, which is Meta’s photo and video-sharing app with a vast user base of over 2 billion, comprising major brands, celebrities, and creators.
