The chairman of Tata Sons has been officially appointed the new chairman of Air India. The airline was in a tight spot and it was acquired by the Tata Group from the government at the right time. Salt-to-software conglomerate Tata Group won the bid to acquire debt-laden government-run Air India. It offered Rs 18,000 crore for it on 8 October last year. On January 27, Tata Sons had regained control of debt-ridden Air India nearly 70 years after the airline’s nationalization.
Air India appointed him in a board meeting last week as per the senior official privy to the development. Another meeting was held on 14 March 2022 to discuss the future growth plans of the airline.
Alice GeeVarghese Vaidyan, who is the former CMD of General Insurance Corporation, and Sanjiv Mehta, who is the chairman of Hindustan Unilever, have also been inducted as independent directors on the Air India’s board. N Chandrasekaran has been reappointed for a second term of five years. Security clearances needed for the board members’ appointment have also paved the way according to sources.
Air India to Appoint a New CEO Very Soon
Tata Sons has also approached the Ministry of Corporate Affairs to seek approval for N Chandrasekaran to chair a few more group firms as he had already touched the prescribed limit at the Tata Group. Tata Sons will also announce the appointment of a new CEO for Air India.
Tata Sons is yet to fill the post of chief executive officer for the airline, after Ilker Ayci, the former chairperson of Turkish Airlines, refused to take on the role, Reuters reported. Turkish expat who was to take the charge next month but he resigned due to some controversies that arose about his appointment. The company has finalized the appointee as per the reports after holding a few discussions in recent days.
Tata Group is keen to start with the operations and executions in the airline. This is why Tata Sons wants the new CEO to take charge of Air India as soon as possible. These areas will be the prime concerns for the upcoming few months.
CEO will focus on expanding the airline’s fleet to both domestic and international networks. Sanjiv Mehta is nominated as one of the non-executive directors of Air India’s reconstituted board. The reconstituted board details may be announced tomorrow, said top officials in the know.
