Today, the 18-member committee tasked with determining the future of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) came to a unanimous decision to decline the resignation of the party’s leader, Sharad Pawar.
He has been the president of the party since its inception in 1999. During his tenure, Pawar has been instrumental in shaping the party’s ideology and strategies, and has played a key role in forging alliances with other political parties at both the state and national levels. He has held several important positions in Indian politics, including serving as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra on three separate occasions. He has also been a member of both houses of the Indian Parliament, the Lok Sabha (lower house) and the Rajya Sabha (upper house). Pawar is widely regarded as a seasoned politician and a skilled strategist, and is known for his contributions to Indian agriculture and rural development.
According to Praful Patel, the convener of the committee and a senior member of the party, a resolution was passed unanimously by the committee. The resolution stated that the resignation of Sharad Pawar, who serves as both the president of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha, had been rejected. The resolution further recommended that Pawar should continue to hold his position as the president of the party.
Following the meeting, Praful Patel held a press conference in which he disclosed that he and other committee members had received calls from a number of prominent political figures who believed that Sharad Pawar should retain his position as the president of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). Patel added that party workers had also expressed their support for Pawar, and that it was important to take their sentiments into account. “He declared that the sentiments of party members cannot be ignored.
Last Tuesday, Sharad Pawar’s sudden announcement of his resignation as the president of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) took the party’s top leaders and workers by surprise, leaving them emotional and pleading for him to reconsider. Praful Patel, who was also caught off guard by the announcement, acknowledged that they had repeatedly urged Pawar to stay on as the head of the party, particularly given the current national political climate.
The opposition’s reaction to Sharad Pawar’s brief resignation as the president of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) was mixed. Some opposition leaders expressed surprise and concern over the announcement, while others speculated about the reasons behind it.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is currently in power at the center, suggested that there were internal disagreements within the NCP that may have prompted Pawar’s resignation. The party’s Maharashtra unit chief, Chandrakant Patil, also claimed that some NCP leaders were in touch with the BJP and may defect to the ruling party.
Other opposition leaders offered their support to Pawar and expressed hope that he would continue to lead the NCP. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, for instance, tweeted that Pawar was “one of our most experienced leaders” and that his guidance was needed in these difficult times. Similarly, West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee expressed her admiration for Pawar and said that he was an “asset for Indian politics.
According to Patel, the committee will now communicate its decision to Pawar and he is expected to respect it. Patel said “we trust that he will honor the decision made by the committee”.
