This weekend, India’s capital city, New Delhi, is set to be a mini-Davos. This news appears to be quite intriguing, as the recent geopolitical advancements have disturbed the global economy and fuel shortages have wrecked some countries. New Delhi is gearing up to host the thinkers from around the world for a three-day discussion on two themes: redefining the future and redefining growth.
The upcoming weekend, July 8–10, will give New Delhi a mini-Davos feel, as it will host over 50 political and economic dignitaries from more than 20 countries, a mix of developing and developed countries.
Later that evening, the Prime Minister will meet with international delegates attending the inaugural three-day Kautilya Economic Conclave. See here.
The Prime Minister will also engage in conversation with the delegates attending the Kautilya Economic Conclave (KEC), a three-day conference being held from July 8 to July 10.
Mr. Nicholas Stern of the London School of Economics; Mr. Robert Lawrence of the Harvard Kennedy School; Mr. John Lipsky, a former acting managing director of the IMF; Ms. Anne Krueger of John Hopkins University; and Shri Junaid Ahmed, the World Bank’s country director for India, among others eminent economists, will meet with the Prime Minister.
The yearly lecture series has been established by the Union Finance Ministry’s department of economic affairs. The lecture series is being organized in honor of Shri Arun Jaitley, who served as the finance minister from 2014 to 2019 during the first term of the Modi administration. It is in the recognition of his great contributions to the Indian economy. Arun Jaitley passed away in August of 2019.
The finance ministry has also stated that Arun Jaitley Memorial Lecture (AJML) will be an annual event.
According to the event organizers, the two annual economic events coincide since the Arun Jaitley Memorial Lecture (AJML) is hosted by the Union Finance Ministry and the Kautilya Economic Conclave (KEC) is being organized by the Institute of Economic Growth (IEG) in collaboration with the ministry.
They have also said that in this time of global crisis, India has emerged as a beacon of hope for the global community. India has the world’s fastest-growing economy. It has the potential to eliminate severe worldwide failures, primarily in the food and pharmaceutical industries.
India has demonstrated its legacy by not only manufacturing COVID-19 vaccines in-house but also supplying numerous countries when they required it the most.
Additionally, it will lead the way in intellectual leadership for the entire world. Delegates from the US, UK, Australia, Germany, Israel, South Africa, Japan, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and China are among those anticipated to attend the three-day conference.
These events are expected to be a resounding success for India.
Shanmugaratnam is said to address the theme of AJML which is ‘Growth through Inclusivity, Inclusivity through Growth’ in his keynote address. After his address, Mathias Cormann, the secretary-general of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), and Arvind Panagariya, a professor at Columbia University and the former first vice-chairman of the NITI Aayog, will participate in a panel discussion.
IEG President NK Singh, who presided over the 15th Finance Commission, will act as the moderator for the panel discussion.
The first AJML will be concluded on July 8. However, KEC is scheduled to continue for two more days. The introductory remarks will be delivered by Harvard Kennedy School professor Robert Lawrence. After her remarks, Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman will deliver the KEC’s inaugural address.
The theme of KEC 2022 is “Redefining the Future.”
