Niloofar Hamedi, an Iranian Journalist was arrested and held in Solitary confinement without any charges only for breaking the news on Mahsa Amini and releasing photos of her parents hugging each other in a hospital room in Tehran.

Niloofar a journalist who specializes in women’s rights was arrested without any charges. According to sources she got away with many hard-hitting stories for many years. Her investigation articles have covered hundreds of articles related to domestic violence and women’s self-immolation, women’s rights.
Previously, in one of her articles, she interviewed Sepideh Rashno’s family and wrote about how an Iranian Writer and artist Sepideh Rashno, was arrested for violating the dress code in Iran in July.
On September 16, she posted a photo of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini a girl, who was also arrested and violently interrogated for violating the dress code, as she was lying on a bed in a coma and her parents hugging each other next to her.
The photo that she casually posted as part of her job and to aware people of women’s rights on Twitter was the start of the change Iran needed. The photo told the world that all was not well with Iranian girl Mahasa Amini and that Iran was trying to silence one more voice.
Little did she know, after the photo was leaked, soon Mahsa Amini passed away and the photo unleashed unwavering protests in various parts of Iran, and even after weeks and despite a government crackdown it would continue. And later the photo was taken down and her tweeter account was banned.
Despite Niloofar 28 other journalists have also been arrested and detained by special forces and Iranian Police without any charges.
Niloofar Hamedi Arrested: Friends and Lawyers Takes Stand
In September 2022, Niloofar’s Lawyer Mohammad Ali Kamfirouzi in his tweeter said, “This morning, Intelligent agents raided my client Niloofar Hamedi’s house, arrested her, and searched her house and confiscated her belongings.”
He also later added Niloofar has not been charged with any charges and is being held in solitary confinement in Iran’s Evin prison.
Facing one of the boldest challenges to the Islamic Republic since 1979, the authorities have used violence and various unethical methods to suppress the various public shows of disagreement in previous years.
More than 185 people including minors and women have been killed and thousands have been arrested by Iranian police. The Iranian government states that not only civilians lost their lives more than 20 security police and Iranian police officers are injured and killed.
Iranian Authorities later added armed Iranian Kurdish dissidents, with protestors and revolutionary guards, attacked their bases several times during the latest unrest.
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has also decided to take a stand against these arrests without any charges and has called Iranian Authorities to “Immediately and unconditional release…. All journalists that have been arrested because of Mahasa Amini’s case coverage and writing and spreading awareness in people about women’s rights.”
Niloofar’s friends also decided to stand against the unjust arrest by Iranian Police. During an interview, her friend described her as “A girl who always went beyond and more for any injustice against women whether its domestic violence or mental torture or dowry or anything related to women’s rights she always stood first and foremost.”
On 11th October, Sharzad Hemmati an Iranian editor wrote, “We all hope Hamedi returns to her office soon. Put her bag on table and write about women who are victims of prejudice in Iran.”
