In its competition with the United States and South Korea, another demonstration of military capabilities was carried out by North Korea. This time in the form of a nuclear-capable drone that is underwater. The North Korean state news agency, KCNA reported on Saturday that the weapon is called “Haeil-2”. Almost a week after it unveiled another non-nuclear underwater drone called “Haeil-1”. The translation for the word Haeil is Tsunami.
The state news agency KCNA went on to say that during the strategic weapons system test conducted underwater for the drone, it cruised at around 621 miles (Or 1,000km) for 71 hours 6 minutes and was successful in hitting a fake target. The tests were carried out from April 4th to April 7th.
Underwater strategic weapons system and its ability to attack fatally.
KCNA said that the test had proved the reliable nature of the underwater strategic weapons system and its ability to attack fatally.
While a few analysts remain skeptical about whether the weapons system is ready for usage, the KCNA maintained that the system was ready and that it would help deter North Korea’s enemies.
North Korean state media also released pictures of the nuclear-capable underwater drone. The pictures showcased a large and dark-colored torpedo object along with the tracks of the underwater trajectory of the weapons system.
North Korea has been testing different weapons systems for months as tensions have risen. Joint military drills between the United States and South Korea have led to North Korea firing short-range ballistic missiles as well as ICBMs (Intercontinental-Ballistic Missiles) near Japanese waters as a method of intimidation and to showcase the readiness of its military and their capabilities.
Under UNSC resolutions and actions done under International Law, North Korea is banned from possessing nuclear weapons. This also extends to its possession and tests of Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles. In fact, the United Nations has passed 9 separate sanctions resolutions on the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea as a response to its nuclear weapon proliferation and missile activities since 2006. \
The resolutions also urge North Korea to recodify the Non-Proliferation Treaty which it left in 2003 after American allegations of North Korea conducting an illegal uranium enrichment program.
The Six-party talks were monumental in this as during 2003-2009 they passed a joint statement on denuclearization, which North Korea was a part of. As a result, North Korea dismantled its Plutonium reactor, but it has restarted this reactor since.
North Korea’s illegal proliferation of Nuclear weapons systems poses a major threat to the region that has been looming for almost 2 decades. The unstable aggression with the country’s recent ballistic missile tests only warrants further aggression by the United States and South Korea as the two work to silence the North Korean threat.
