Ola is looking to build the most advanced battery cell R&D facility in Bangalore. They will spend around $500 million (around Rs 4,000 crore) on the project.
Ola’s CEO Bhavish Aggarwal officially announced the project on Monday. He wants to build a Battery Innovation Center (BIC) in Bangalore.
Ola is already in talks with many global suppliers to invest and provide support in building the facility.
This facility will be the largest facility to make battery cell R&D in Asia. This facility will have more than 165 unique cutting-edge equipment to make and cover all the aspects of cell-related R&D.
The facility will be able to produce many kinds or forms of battery cells like cylindrical, pouch, prismatic cells and etc.
This facility has all the tools and capabilities to develop, fabricate and even test the battery cells under one single roof.
It will also be able to produce mg to kg scale of anode and cathode material to analyse the battery cell structure at a molecular level.
This facility with all the tools and equipment will require employees as well. It is speculated that more than 500 engineers and PhDs will be hired. In addition to this, around 1000 researchers from India will be hired.
Ola has recently released their first Li-ion cell NMC 2170. This will be produced in the facility and will be able to mass produced in the next year.
Ola is also looking to build a 50Gwh battery plant in India alongside making the facility with the help of global suppliers and battery production facilities.
EVs are the new sector where all the companies are looking to invest for the future. With this facility, Ola is taking a step towards realizing the step of making India Electric.
