Pandemic has paved the way for Event Cinema

With the retreat of the second wave and a gradual purge in the covid cases, the country is lifting the curtains on cinema halls. The Delhi government has already relaxed restrictions from July 26, so the Bollywood industry is finally looking forward to new releases from the August 13 weekend. Bookings in event cinema are rising too.

Following the footsteps of Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana are also considering resume operations this independence day weekend with 50% capacity.

The covid pandemic has made the film industry sick with the numerous sleepless nights, especially the producers and owners of big screens. Still, it has also paved the way for event cinema to take the forefront. For so long, event cinema or alternative cinema has only entertained a select group of amateur artists. With the advent of OTT platforms, the rise of alternative cinema sealed. The decision to relieve theatres and cinema halls came in as a breather to many multiplexes’ owners. The CEO of Cinepolis, Devang Sampat, said they would start opening in 3-4 days while preparing their premises according to covid protocols. He added that his staff has been vaccinated and will follow all the rules to ramp up the period for informing the audience of the upcoming releases. Right now, they have a 50% capacity constraint.

Event Cinema : Appropriate Measure Of Entertainment

It has become a little too obvious to choose between floundered seating, mandatory masks, no popcorn and snuggly sofas, a perfect streaming platform and popcorn. In a survey by LocalCircles, only 10% of the people were willing to visit the cinema.

It already started to defog that first-day show has become a thing of the past, and more people prefer the OTT-platforms where the content is overflowing. But many are still hopeful for the return of zeal that created these numerous theatres throughout the country. Delite Cinema Manager said, “Expecting to open by Friday. Producers are waiting to release their movies here because `big screen is big screen`,” while speaking to ANI.

Sunset Cinema Club is a Mumbai-based venture projecting classic films to screen most innovatively in the country bound with pandemics and repercussions. With event cinema taking the light off traditional and commercial cinema, drive-in and open-air screening have become a bright glow in the dark.

It has proved to be the solution that many of the movie enthusiasts could now cherish. Maintaining social distance in the safety of your cars has become a life-saver for theatre operators affected due to the pandemic. The alternative cinema will now give small artists and creators opportunities to showcase various art forms and get an audience celebrating them with recognition.
