In order to encourage adventure sports, paragliding activities are scheduled to begin soon in the city of Jammu. Across the city division, a number of paragliding trials have been carried out. This project is being conducted by the Department of Jammu Tourism and the Indian Institute of Skiing and Mountaineering (IISM) Gulmarg.
According to the reports, the Jammu division conducted paragliding trials at seven different places. The trial locations were Aithem in the Jammu district, Dhanwa and Mokhri in the Reasi district, Bhaderwah in the Doda district, Patnitop in the Ramban district, and Sanasar in the Kishtwar district.
Vivekanand Rai, the director of tourism for Jammu stated, “The trial runs were successful and the people of Jammu division will see gliders flying in the sky soon,”. Despite successful paragliding trials at several places in the Jammu Division, according to Sunaina Mehta, Joint Director of Tourism, the potential of paragliding has not been fully realized in the area due to a shortage of skilled labor as required by adventure tourism guidelines.
At some locations, the professional pilot teams have recommended remedial measures. Trials are crucial to ensuring the security of adventure seekers. According to data released publicly by the government of Jammu and Kashmir’s Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR), there has been an increase in the number of tourists visiting the Union Territory. The number of visitors visiting the valley in 2022 alone was 1.62 crore, which is the most since independence. As a result, Jammu has a lot of potential as a location to develop the tourism industry.
According to the officials, the department will provide professional training sessions for local youth in the following month to promote the area as a tourist destination for outdoor activities. This endeavor might also aid in increasing tourism activities and so help the economy, as adventure tourism is a rapidly expanding global niche. Additionally, it has the potential to provide a variety of new job possibilities in the tourism sector.
Also, first-of-its-kind paragliding pilot courses will also be provided. According to the officials, the department would support the courses as part of its efforts to build capacity in order to make adventure tourism a viable industry.
