The government had installed a digital clock that was ticking backward to calculate how many vaccination doses were still needed to reach the threshold on Saturday.
India’s most recent accomplishment coincides with the government’s 75-day campaign to offer free booster shots at government offices, which was launched on Friday to inspire citizens and commemorate India’s 75th anniversary of independence.
Dr. Poonam Khetrapal Singh, regional director of WHO South-East Asia, congratulated India on achieving the outstanding milestone.
In a video address, she stated, “This is yet another example of the country’s commitment and efforts to minimize the impact of the ongoing pandemic.”
India launched the “World’s Largest Vaccination Program” on January 16, 2021.
It began when the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) approved two indigenous vaccines for emergency use: COVISHIELD, which has been developed by the Serum Institute of India, and COVAXIN, developed by Bharat Biotech.
The Prime Minister, Modi, had stated during the launch of the program that two vaccines are the most affordable in the world and that India will use its capacity for vaccine production and delivery to aid all of humanity in battling this crisis.
PM Modi added that with the approval of two COVID-19 vaccines made in India, India is entering into a crucial phase of immunization in the battle against the pandemic.
India has a history of conducting extensive and focused vaccination programme against diseases such as, for example, measles, tetanus, and diphtheria under the country’s Universal Immunization Program, which annually targets 267 million new-born and 29 million expectant mothers.
India has already eradicated polio and smallpox.
The Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, along with Shri Devusinh Chauhan, Union Minister of State for Communications, and Dr. Bharati Pravin Pawar, Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, has previously issued a commemorative postal stamp on the COVID-19 vaccine to commemorate the first year of India’s National Covid-19 Vaccination Programme.
