India will get its 15th President of the country. Draupadi Murmu will become the 2nd woman president of the country if elected.
MLAs and MPs will cast their votes for the next President of the country today between 10 am and 5 pm. With this, India will have its 15th President of the country.
The ballot will take place in Parliament House and state legislative assemblies. Thereafter the counting of votes will resume on July 21 while the next president pledges on July 25.
With President Ram Nath Kovind’s term coming to an end on July 24, all eyes are on the next President of the country.
Draupadi Murmu, from the ruling party BJP and Oppositional candidate Yashwant Sinha are the candidates for the post.
NDA Candidate, Draupadi Murmu comes from a tribal community and has the clear advantage of being elected as she enjoys the support of several regional parties. BJD, YSRCP, BSP, TDP, JD(S), Shiromani Akali Dal and now JMM parties are supportive of the candidate.
Oppositional candidate, Yashwant Sinha who on the other hand got chosen after various candidates rejected the proposal. Before him, the Opposition chose former Bengal Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi, NCP supremo Sharad Pawar and even President of National Conference Farooq Abdullah.
However, knowing the most certain results nobody dared.
Sinha, a former Union Minister during the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government, agreed to contest for the post. He appealed to vote for him by stating “Elect me to Save Democracy”.
2017 Elections
In the 2017 elections, Ram Nath Kovind won the elections with a clear majority. He drew 7,02,000 votes out of 10,69,358 votes. Leaving the opposition to get off with only 3,67,000 votes.
Murmu comes to power
Murmu is expected to pull over 60% of the votes. If this happens, she would become the first woman from the tribal community to hold the country’s top constitutional post. Also, she would become the second woman president of the country after Pratibha Patel.
Coming from a Santhal community this community is exhilarated ever since the news of Murmu’s nominations erupted. They paid their veneration to their lords- Marangbaru, Aera and Jaherayo in Mayurbhanj and prayed for her Victory.
Things to know about Presidential Elections 2022
- A total of 4,809 members of the electoral college will participate in the elections. The electoral college will include both MLAs and MPs. The elected member will then become the occupant of the seat of resigning President, Ram Nath Kovind.
- According to the 2022 census, 4033 MLAs and 776 MPs will be participating in the elections.
- Members of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha as well as state legislatures cast their votes for the President. Presently, there are 233 MPs in the 245-member Rajya Sabha.
- The vote of each member of the parliament has gone down to 700 from 708 in the presidential poll due to the non-existence of a legislative Assembly in Jammu and Kashmir.
- According to the Election Commission, MPs will get green ballot papers while MLAs will have Pink colour ballot papers. This is to distinguish MLA and MPs and determine the value.
- A specially designed pen with violet ink will be issued for enabling voters to mark their ballot papers in the presidential poll.
- NDA Candidate Draupadi Murmu has over 6.67 lakh votes after the support of various regional parties. This Gave her a true edge over the opposition out of 10,86,431 votes.

18th July Around over 4800 MPs and MLAs will pole to elect the President of the country.
21st July Counting of votes will betide.
24th July President Ram Nath Kovind resigns from the post as his tenure comes to an end.
25th July Newly elected President also the 15th President of the country takes the oath.
