Agartala: On Sunday, December 18, 2022, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate Tripura’s first Dental College in Agartala, confirmed Chief Minister Manik Saha.
Modi’s visit comes amidst an ongoing initiative of the state government to extend governance to the doorstep through the portal ‘Amar Sarkar’ (My Government) to fulfil Localised Sustainable Development Goals (LSDG).
Permission Granted
On Thursday, as per the recommendations of the Dental Council of India (DCI), the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare granted permission to establish a Dental College in Indra Gandhi Memorial (IGM) hospital’s new building, told Saha at a press conference here on Thursday night.
“Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Tripura on Sunday to address a rally, inaugurate some projects and interact with the beneficiaries of the welfare schemes of the Central and state. During the visit the PM will also inaugurate the Dental College”, said the chief minister of Tripura.
Saha also told that a DCI team visited the proposed building for the Dental College earlier on the 12th and 13th of December and they inspected all the facilities there.
The chief minister further told that the inspection authorities were impressed with the infrastructure at the proposed building and the Executive Council of DCI approved the proposal of setting up a Dental College on Thursday, December 15.
Admission and Number of Seats
The chief minister also informed that the Dental College will have 50 seats and the college will function under Tripura Central University. The chief minister himself holds the Health and Family Welfare portfolio. He further added that of the 50 seats, 15 per cent of the seats will be reserved for the central pool while 7/8 seats will go for the north-eastern states and the remaining seats will be then reserved for the students of Tripura itself.
Saha told that the setting up of a Dental College is a dream project for the state of Tripura. He said that four-year BDS admission will be made based on the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) and later it will be upgraded gradually. The academic session will start in September, the coming year.
The chief minister Saha also thanked the Prime Minister and Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Mansukh Mandaviya for permitting the establishment of a Dental College in the state.
Both the Tripura Medical College and Teaching Hospital and the government-run Agartala Medical College (AGMC) are located in the north-eastern state only.
