Prime Minister Narendra Modi has requested all the netizens to put the “tiranga” or tricolour flags as their display pictures. It needs to be done in social media profiles. All citizens of India are requested to change their profile pictures to India’s flag between 2nd and 15th of August.
What is the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ movement announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi?
This announcement comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged everyone to enthusiastically participate in the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ movement. People are also requested to hoist the national flag in all houses of India so that this event successful. This event is surely turning into a mass movement because people are pouring in praise and support in the noble cause.
The announcement was made on the monthly ‘Man ki Baat’ programme broadcasted on radio. Here the Prime Minister addresses the entire nation once in every month. Modi is known to be a skillful orator who shares his thoughts and musings with his kinsmen of the nation. Har Ghar Tiranga will be celebrated between 13th and 15th of August.
This unique drive is a part of ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’ event that is being celebrated across the country. On this Independence day, India will enter into the 75th year of freedom. Due to this, various kinds of functions are being organised in nook and corner of the country to celebrate the essence of freedom of 75 glorious years.
This is also a time when we should remember all of the brave freedom fighters who laid down their lives for our freedom. It is because of them that today we can proudly hoist the flag passed down by them with pride in our heart.
What was August 2 chosen for this special drive?
August 2 is the birth anniversary of Pingali Venkayya “who designed our national flag.” By choosing 2nd August as the social media drive date, we will be honouring the great man.
Venkayya was a congressman who presented a design for our national flag. His flag had the present three colours and a khadi charkha in the middle. Charkha means the spinning wheel.The charkha was incorporated because it stood for self reliance. The present day flag is somewhat different but the design by Venkayya served as a prototype.
Prime Minister Naredra Modi also gave references to Madam Cama who also influenced the designs of our national flag. Her version released in 1907 also had the three colours with ‘Vande Maa Taram’ in the centre and some religious symbols.

The Central Government has also done away with the Flag Code for a while. For the special movement, the flag can be made of any material ranging from plastic, polyester, cotton, silk to wool. Earlier polyester and machine made flags were banned. The flag can be displayed anytime, not like the previous times when it could be flown only from sunrise to sunset. There is no restriction on the size and timings of hoisting.
A national report has confirmed that there will be around 20 crore national flags on display on the rooftops to commemorate the special event.
Moreover, he also congratulated students of class 10 and 12 whose board results were declared recently in his ‘Mann ki Baat’. He also appreciated the sports person for their glorious medal haul in July. Besides, he also hailed the government schemes implemented during his tenure.
