According to reports, Prince Charles will be officially declared King on Saturday, in front of a ceremonial body known as the Accession Council. It comprises members of the Privy Council, including a group of senior MPs, past and present peers, a few senior civil servants, Commonwealth High Commissioners, and the Lord Mayor of London.
The meeting will be held at St James’s Palace in London. At the meeting, Queen Elizabeth’s death will be announced, and a proclamation will be read aloud. Thereafter, the prime minister, Archbishop of Canterbury and the Lord Chancellor will sign the proclamation.
The coronation marks the symbolic high point. King Charles’s coronation is unlikely to happen soon after his accession. Queen Elizabeth succeeded the throne in 1952 but was not crowned until June 1953. In addition, the coronation expenses are paid by the government as it is a state occasion. The government decides the guestlist too.
