The visitors’ openers give them optimism, but he and Rizwan put on a 154-run sixth-wicket stand.
After squandering a 315-run first-innings lead owing to an unbroken opening stand of 169 between Alex Lees and Sean Dickson, Durham had a golden chance to save their LV= Insurance County Championship match against Sussex at Hove.
Dickson reached his century off 137 balls with 15 fours right before the end of the game, while Lees concluded with 50 not out.
Pujara Show
Sussex had earlier continued to control their match against one of the promotion favorites, with Cheteshwar Pujara and Mohammad Rizwan putting on 154 for the sixth wicket.
As Sussex piled on 538 runs, Pujara hit 203, his second double-century in three matches (there was another hundred in the other encounter), while Rizwan recovered his form with an innings of 79 on his home debut.
On the last day, there are enough fractures on the ground to excite the Sussex spinners. Durham, though, who behind by 146 runs.
Sussex scored 128 runs without losing a wicket in the first session, but Durham bowled brilliantly in difficult circumstances against two world-class hitters, and Matthew Potts’ bowling downhill from the Cromwell Road end was heroic.
The day Started
Sussex were 362 for 5 at the start of the day, with Pujara unbeaten on 128 and Rizwan undefeated on 5. In the first 45 minutes, the India Test batter scored only eight runs, but Rizwan was the busier of the two, scoring 36 runs by the time the pair had put in fifty runs.
There were a few scares. When Dickson was 36, he almost ran Rizwan out, and Pujara, who was on 140, was on the verge of being caught at first slip. The excellent batting of both hitters proved their true significance in a young and depleted Sussex club.
At lunch, Sussex had reached 490 for 5, a 267-run lead, ten minutes later than intended due to 13 overs being missed on the second day. Rizwan had 74 while Pujara had 186.
Rizwan was wonderfully caught by Trevaskis at deep square-leg four runs later, driving hard against Matt Salisbury. The 150-run partnership came off 149 balls, which corresponded with the team’s 500th run.
