The Indian Premier League, a cricket tournament based on the Twenty20 format of the game, was established by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in 2007. A franchise auction was held in Mumbai on February 20th, 2008, during which eight cities were offered franchises.
A total of 46 percent of the Punjab Kings team was purchased by Mohit Burman of the Dabur group, 23 percent by Ness Wadia of the Wadia group, 23 percent by Preity Zinta of the Dey & Dey Group, and 13 percent by Saptarshi Dey of the Dey & Dey Group (minor stake). When it came to buying the franchise, the group spent a total of $76 million.
Known as the Punjab Kings, the franchise’s catchment areas included the Indian states of Kashmir, Jammu and Kashmir, Himalayan states of Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, and Haryana, as indicated by the letter sequence “K J H P H” in the team’s logo’s banner.
Getting kicked out of the IPL and going back home
Due to the controversy that erupted around the BCCI and Lalit Modi in 2010, the Indian Premier League announced on October 10, 2010, that it had terminated the franchise contracts of Kings XI Punjab and Rajasthan Royals.
Several teams in the Indian Premier League have announced that they will pursue legal action in order to remain in the competition. [3] Initially, the team attempted to negotiate a solution with the league; however, when no agreement could be reached, the team decided to file a lawsuit in the Mumbai High Court, accusing the IPL of attempting to get rid of the two teams in order for the contract to be awarded to a more lucrative bidder when the bidding process for the 2012 IPL season began.
With the assistance of the High Court, Kings XI Punjab was re-instated.
Modification of the company’s name
Prior to the 2021 Indian Premier League season, the Kings XI Punjab team was renamed to Punjab Kings on February 17, 2021.
According to Ness Wadia, the reason for changing the franchise name was to “relook at things” and rebrand after 13 seasons in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He expressed his dissatisfaction with the franchise for “failing to win a championship” and expressed his expectation that they would “start afresh” following the name change. COVID-19 had only delayed the announcement because the name change had been planned for two years, he continued.
Team history
In 2008, the Kings XI Punjab won the IPL.
The Kings XI Punjab got off to a shaky start in the 2008 edition of the tournament, losing their opening two matches. However, Kumar Sangakkara’s 94 runs in the third game proved to be the difference. It didn’t matter that Brett Lee and Simon Katich couldn’t play because they were committed to accompany Australia on its West Indies tour; the team found its groove.
Because of their balanced bowling attack[10] and effective top order[11], the team won nine of their next ten matches, earning a spot in the semifinals, where they were defeated by the Chennai Super Kings by a nine-wicket margin [see below].
Shaun Marsh was, without a doubt, the most impressive performer for Kings XI Punjab in the inaugural IPL.
The Western Australian opener was passed over in the IPL player auctions and was signed by the franchise on April 9, after being overlooked.
The Orange Cap (awarded to the player who scores the most runs across the entire tournament) was hiss after finishing with an average of 68.44 and a strike rate of 139.68 in 11 innings, earning him the honour of winning the tournament. Marsh finished the tournament with a century and five half-centuries, which was a tournament record.
In 2009, the Kings XI Punjab won the IPL.
Following their appearance in the semi-finals of the 2008 IPL, Kings XI Punjab set their sights on winning the championship. All of this was made possible thanks to the generosity of their new sponsors, Emirates Airlines. In the second IPL auction, the Kings XI Punjab placed bids on Jerome Taylor and Yusuf Abdulla, filling two open slots on their roster.
The absence of the vast majority of the team’s Australian cricketers resulted in a setback for the team. Following Jerome Taylor’s injury withdrawal at the eleventh hour, the team was unable to field a full complement of pace bowlers.
Following crushing losses to the Delhi Daredevils and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), the team rebounded with victories over the Royal Challengers Bangalore, Rajasthan Royals, and Mumbai Indians to finish the season with a record of 8-2. In the ensuing eight matches, the team experienced a roller-coaster ride, winning four and losing four games in succession. Following their loss to the Chennai Super Kings in their previous match, the team’s hopes of making it to the semi-finals were dashed.
In 2010, Kings XI Punjab lost six matches to the Kolkata Knight Riders, the Delhi Daredevils, the Royal Challengers Bangalore, the Deccan Chargers, the Rajasthan Royals, and the Mumbai Indians, but won one against the Chennai Super Kings in a Super Over. In 2011, the team will face the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the first round of the Indian Premier League.
Kings XI Punjab’s chances against Kolkata were improved by the return of Brett Lee, who was not at his best against the Kolkata Royals. Shaun Marsh returned to the field against the Mumbai Indians in his first game back. Despite his outstanding performance, which included a half-century, the team fell short of the victory. They finished last in the Indian Premier League in 2010.
In 2011, the Kings XI Punjab won the IPL.
When they fielded a full strength team, led by Michael Bevan and captained by Adam Gilchrist, the 2011 Indian Premier League season appeared to be looking promising.
In the end, Kings XI Punjab were eliminated from the play-offs by a narrow two-point margin (or one victory). Consequently, they finished fifth in the overall standings.
Despite winning eight of their sixteen matches, Kings XI Punjab finished sixth overall in 2012.
Despite the fact that Kings XI Punjab did not advance to the play-off stage in 2013, batsman David Miller put on a display that was among the best of the tournament in the team’s 51st match against Royal Challengers Bangalore, scoring 101 off 38 deliveries with eight fours and seven sixes.
When Miller entered the game, Kings XI Punjab were struggling for 51 runs in the eighth over and chasing a target of 190. Miller helped Punjab to a six-wicket victory with two overs left to play in the match. At the conclusion of the season, Adam Gilchrist announced his retirement from the game.
In 2014, Kings XI Punjab was a successful franchise.
Australia’s Twenty20I captain, George Bailey, was in charge of the squad for the seventh season. In addition, Virender Sehwag, Glenn Maxwell, and Mitchell Johnson were signed to contracts. Due to the general elections in India, Kings XI Punjab began the tournament by winning their first five matches, all of which were played outside of the country, in the United Arab Emirates.
Among the standout players was Glenn Maxwell, who stood out for his unconventional and powerful hitting style, scoring 95, 89, and 95 in his first three innings of work while maintaining a strike rate of more than 200.
South African David Miller was a valuable asset to the team, and the two of them worked together to give the impression of invincibility. Multiple innings from Virender Sehwag, a veteran Indian batsman, and rising star Manan Vohra reduced the burden on the middle order and enabled the team to make the playoffs. When the Kolkata Knight Riders defeated the Chennai Super Kings in the semifinals, Virender Sehwag scored a 122-run innings to advance to the final.
They went up against the Kolkata Knight Riders and batted first, setting a respectable target of 199 thanks to Wriddhiman Saha’s 115-run tonne in the process. [16] A combination of Manish Pandey’s 94 off 50 balls and his teammates’ consistently high strike rates, including Pisush Chawla’s 13 off five balls, enabled Kings XI Punjab to win the final by three wickets in the final over of play. [17]
Kings XI Punjab qualified for the 2014 Champions League Twenty20 by finishing as runners-up in the Indian Premier League in the previous season. As part of Group B, they were grouped with the Hobart Hurricanes (Australia), Barbados Tridents (West Indies), Cape Cobras (South Africa), and Northern Knights (Canada) (New Zealand).
It was at their home ground, the PCA Stadium in Mohali, that Kings XI Punjab won their first match against the Hobart Hurricanes, defeating them by five wickets and bowling them out for 144–6 in just 17.4 overs. Thisara Perera was named Man of the Match after posting scores of 2–17 and 35. Glenn Maxwell finished the game with a total of 43 points, which was the most in the game.
Additionally, they defeated the Barbados Tridents by a margin of four wickets in the second match. As a result of their victory over the Northern Knights in their third match of the competition, they advanced to the semi-finals. Even though they defeated the Cape Cobras in their final group match, they were eliminated from the tournament in the semi-finals after a disappointing loss to IPL rivals the Chennai Super Kings[18], who went on to win the tournament.
In 2015, Kings XI Punjab was a successful franchise.
Throughout the 2015 season, George Bailey served as the team’s captain and leader. It won three of its fourteen games and finished eighth in the league as a result of its performance. Anureet Singh finished the season with 15 wickets and 357 runs, while David Miller finished with 357 runs and 15 wickets.
In 2016, Kings XI Punjab will play in the Indian Premier League.
Capturing the team for the first and second half of the 2016 season was David Miller, while Murali Vijay served as the team’s vice captain for the first and second halves of the season was Murali Vijay. With only four victories, the team finished eighth for the second consecutive season. With 453 runs scored and 15 wickets taken, Murali Vijay is the highest run scorer in the history of the game.
In 2017, Kings XI Punjab will be the team to beat.
Virender Sehwag was appointed as the team’s head coach as it attempted to rebound from two consecutive last-place finishes in the league. Captain Glenn Maxwell has been appointed. With the addition of Eoin Morgan, Darren Sammy, and Hashim Amla, the team now boasts a total of nine players. With a last-game loss to the Rising Pune Supergiant, the team missed out on a playoff spot and finished fifth overall, despite winning seven of their fourteen games. After scoring 420 runs, including two centuries, Hashim Amla finished the season with 17 wickets, while Sandeep Sharma took the most wickets with 18.
In 2018, the Kings XI Punjab will be a major force.
The Kings XI Punjab squad for the 2018 Indian Premier League season included internationals Ravichandran Ashwin, Yuvraj Singh, KL Rahul, Aaron Finch, and Chris Gayle, among others. Ashwin has been named captain, and Brad Hodge has been appointed coach.
As the tournament got underway, KL Rahul scored a fine fifty off 14 balls to lead KXIP to a convincing victory over the Daredevils. KL Rahul and Chris Gayle were in excellent form at the top of their order, and Andrew Tye and Mujeeb Ur Rahman were excellent with their bats.
As a result, the team won five of their first six games and quickly established themselves as title contenders. They were exposed, however, as they only managed one win in their next eight games, ultimately failing to qualify for the playoffs despite having a fantastic start to their season.
Kings XI Punjab in the Indian Premier League in 2019 Franchises have confirmed the names of their retained players for the 12th season of the Indian Premier League. For the 2019 season, KXIP has decided to keep the following players on their roster: KL Rahul, Chris Gayle, Andrew Tye, Mayank Agarwal, Ankit Rajpoot, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Karun Nair, David Miller, and Ravichandran Ashwin were all named to the squad, which also included Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Karun Nair, David Miller, and Ravichandran Ashwin.
Among the 13 new players signed by KXIP on the day of the auction were Varun Chakaravarthy, Sam Curran, Mohammed Shami, Prabhsimran Singh, Nicholas Pooran, Moises Henriques, Hardus Viljoen, Darshan Nalkande, Sarfaraz Khan, Arshdeep Singh, Agnivesh Ayachi, Harpreet Brar, and Murugan Ashwin, who was also signed by KKR (18 December 2018). [19] The Kings XI Punjab team finished sixth in the Indian Premier League. Having scored 593 runs in 14 matches, KL Rahul was the leading run scorer for the team.
In the year 2020, Kings XI Punjab will be the team to beat.
Among those released from the Kings XI Punjab roster for the 2020 season are Varun Chakravarthy, Andrew Tye, Sam Curran, Prabhsimran Singh (who was subsequently repurchased), David Miller, Moises Henriques, and Agnivesh Ayachi. Glenn Maxwell, Deepak Hooda, James Neesham, Prabhsimran Singh, Chris Jordan, Tanjinder Dhillon, Ravi Bishnoi, Ishan Porel, and Sheldon Cottrell have all been added to their 2020 squad, which also includes Chris Jordan. KL Rahul Dravid, Karun Nair, Mohammed Shami, Nicholas Pooran, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Chris Gayle, Mandeep Singh, Mayank Agarwal, Hardus Viljoen, Darshan Nalkande, Sarfaraz Khan, Arshdeep Singh, Harpreet Brar, and Murugan Ashwin are some of the players who have been retained by the franchise. [20] As well as trading R Ashwin to the Delhi Capitals and all-rounder Krishnappa Gowtham to the Kings XI Punjab, they were successful in their other trades.
On September 20, the Kings XI began their season-opening campaign. KL Rahul, the new captain of the Kings, made the decision to go into the field first. The outcome of this nail-biting competition was a tie. Delhi started the tournament with a win, defeating Punjab’s team in the Super Over to get the ball rolling. After losing eight wickets, Delhi scored 157 runs in 20 overs to win by eight wickets.
In spite of losing early wickets, Marcus Stoinis’ outstanding performance helped the Delhi Capitals achieve their target of 157 runs. Thanks to Mayank Agarwal’s 89-run knock, Punjab scored 157 runs in 20 overs in response to the 158 runs scored by the opposition.
The Kings XI Punjab defeated the Royal Challengers Bangalore by 97 runs in their season-opening match on September 24th. After losing the toss, KL Rahul was given the opportunity to bat. With a 57-run opening stand, Rahul and Mayank Agarwal put the Kings XI innings on the road to victory. After scoring 132 runs in 70 deliveries (14 fours and seven sixes), Rahul guided the Kings XI Punjab to a total of 206/3 in 20 overs.
The Royal Challengers Bangalore had lost three wickets in the first four overs of their chase for a target of 207 runs when the game began. The new ball pair of Sheldon Cottrell and Mohammed Shami, representing Kings XI, continued their excellent form from the previous match, and Royal Challengers were eventually bowled out for 109 runs in the final match. Rahul became the Indian batsman in IPL history to reach 2000 runs in the shortest amount of time.
They were eliminated, however, by the Rajasthan Royals, who successfully chased down 223 before going on to lose five straight games. Punjab ended their losing streak by defeating Bangalore for the second time and then the Mumbai Indians in the Super Over to complete the comeback. They then went on to win three more matches, against Delhi, Hyderabad, and Kolkata, to complete their winning streak.
They did, however, lose two matches by the time the tournament came to a close. Punjab’s most recent match was against the Chennai Super Kings, who defeated them convincingly by nine wickets to knock them out of the tournament.
Punjab was eliminated from the tournament. On the final standings, they were ranked sixth. KL Rahul was the team’s leading run-scorer once again, amassing 670 runs in 14 matches, while Mohammed Shami topped the franchise’s bowling charts, taking 20 wickets in 14 games.
