Punjab’s wooden toy industry is seeking govt. Assistance in the aftermath of the COVID pandemic to help the industry flourish again.Â
Gurpreet Singh has a toy seller; his toy shop is on the way from Chandigarh to Sangrur. He makes and sells these wooden toys at his shop. He said that his family has been making wooden toys since 1994, but 90% of the work stopped due to pandemics.Â
Now we are getting back to normal, but 50% are still not in line—with the govt. Needs to approve and recognize this work only then will we hit the ground, said the toy trader.Â
Claiming that wooden toys are not found anywhere globally, Gurpreet said that Punjab could manufacture and export them as Brand India.
“We have exported to the US on our on-demand, but we need a regulator,” he said this work should be brought under GST.Â
Gurpreet, who hails from the backward village, reiterated that every youth of Punjab could benefit from a business if the govt. Has Supported him, courses and workshops should also be started; this field can feed the whole village. I could spend my life teaching this skill, the toy trader said.Â
Further, he said China has a toy business of thousands of crores in India, but the situation in Punjab is that we have more wooden toys in every house than the Chinese; we are China in terms of toys.
