After recognizing the independence of Ukraine’s breakaway regions in his Monday speech to the nation, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the Russian Armed Forces too area of location.
A significant development, as Putin issued a proclamation recognizing the independence of the breakaway republics of Donetsk and Luhansk the same day. Putin made the statement to Russians during a televised address.
Following the news, the US indicated it would shortly impose sanctions on two rebel regions in Ukraine backed by Russia. Putin’s decision to recognize the “so-called Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics” as “independent” was roundly opposed by the United States.
“As we said when the Duma first made its request: this decision represents a complete rejection of Russia’s commitments under the Minsk agreements, directly contradicts Russia’s claimed commitment to diplomacy, and is a clear attack on Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” said the White House.
President Biden will sign an Executive Order prohibiting all new investment, trade, and finance by American citizens to, from, or in the “so-called Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics.”
